What's the problem with replacing rubber hoses?
The front axle hardware is not all there is to 4wd operation.
The transfer case has to be brought into play by the case motor to drive the front drive shaft and the Gem module to control the system..
For 4L you need the case motor to advance to it's second position and signal the PCM to change the shift schedule.
Nothing easy about getting around it.
Repair the system as it's supposed to be.
Good luck.

Yeah for $200.00 or less i think is not a bad deal for a kit that contians all of the parts w/instructions. I would guess that you would have to lube it periodically though.

pull both vacuum hoses off at the alxe cylinder. Start truck and switch from 2 x 4 to 4 x 4.. you should have vacuum on one, then vacuum on the other when you switch. If not, check the solenoids on the firewall and vacuum hose from the manifold.. IF you have vacuum on the hoses, lube the cylinder and work it in and out by hand to free it up.

4wd indicator switch

There are a lot of good troubleshooting guides on here for reference. They eventually led me in the right direction, but most I found fail to stress the importance of the "4wd indicator switch" as referenced in the Haynes manual, or "MOTORCRAFT Part # SW6251, Oil Pressure Sender / Switch" as listed on Rock Auto. The part is referenced in other post but under the name "Transmission Range Sensor", this is incorrect.

The part is located on the front of the transfer case. When the "MSOF" engages the transfer case to 4 hi / 4 low, this "4wd indicator switch" senses the change and relays that info to the PCM, which in turn controls the behavior of the two solenoids and the dash lights.

I purchased the part for less than 20$ and it fixed me up!
