New to site , I have a 03 f150 4x4 XLT manual shifter for 4x4 . when I shift into 4hi light comes on but wheels dont engage. My buddy was under truck watching as I shifted and linage was moving back and forth as i shifted.Shaft to transfer case willnot spin when shifter is in 4hi but wheels will not engage, shaft is free when in 2 wheel drive.I did a search for this and read alot of posts about vacuum hose Im confused. Please help!
Ok, the shift lever engages the transfer case, but there is a vacuum powered motor mounted to your front differential that engages the axel shafts. Your problem could be the vacuum motor itself, the solenoid or the vacuum lines.
Ok, it’s been awhile but here’s what I remember. The vacuum motor is mounted on the passenger side of the differential with 2 little rubber (I think) hoses plugged into it. Those go up to 2 solenoids mounted next to each other somewhere top centerish on the fire wall, don’t quote me on that. The solenoids control the vacuum. In 2Hi one should be on and the other off, in 4Hi/Low it should be vice versa. Find these solenoids and make sure they are engaging right by disconnecting the hose and feeling for vacuum in 2 and 4 wheel drive. From there make sure your getting vacuum to the motor itself.
Edit, never mind, they are located on the passenger side fender.
