We had a snow fall today and when i shifted my 2005 F150 into 4 wheel drive it did not shift . It is a manual shift mechanical lever and the 4 wd light go's on but that is all. I seems to shift the transfer case to high or low 4 wheel drive with the light going on but does not seem to have power to the front diff. anyone out there have this problem..
When in got into the iwe system i found ; that the iwe's had destroyed themselves by trying to engage when the truck was pulling on hills under low vacuum I replaced the iwe ' s and then tested the whole vacuum system.I installed a new style iwe solinoid with the water cover on it,replaced one faulty check valve and found a bad vacuum leak in the line going to the drivers side iwe . this leak was what caused the vacuum to surge up and down with engine load, especially on the hills under load. I installed a vacuum gauge in the cab so i could monitor the system in the future. If there is a leak in the system the vacuum reserve fluctuates with the engine and vacuum below 5 in of vacuum will release the iews and engage the gears. Now that the system is working properly the vacuum in my truck stays at a steady 22 in of vacuum at all times, Even under load. I tapped the vacuum gauge into the line going to the vacuum reservoir . Not the engine source of vacuum.. I hope any of this helps someone else.

Hey you need to confirm what is and what is not going on, its pretty easy and can be done with chalk or tape. try this first make a mark on the three players, driveshaft, and both u-joints as they go into the front wheels, the mark being a line of some typr. Then driving in a straith line in 4wd, move a distance then get out and look (be sure when you stop to set the park brake) look to see if any of the lines have changed location. if yes then the transfere case is working, second based on if the transfere case is working, manually engauge the hubs if possable, move the truck back and forth to ensure the engauge, set the park brake. raise one wheel off the ground and try to rotate it by hand. if it spins you have issues ( if it does spin look at the front driveshaft if it is turning then you may have transfere case issues), if it wont turn then the system should be woking. This is not a foolproof way of identifcation as to what is wrong but it is something that you can do to possably get a idea as to what componit may have the issue. ** but the way when you go into low range is there any difference?
I'm sorry but i used the wrong header on my post the first time.I'm just a newbe to these forums. All I knew at first that I didn't have four wheel drive. After i really got into repairing my truck i discovered that the transfer case was shifting o.k.The problem turned out to be a vacuum leak in in the itergrated wheel end vacuum tubing. On my second post to this forum i described My problem and what I did to fix it, but i appreciate your input.
