More black smoke stock than tuned
Id like to figure out why my truck smokes more in stock tune than tuned. The only time it smokes is if i let off the throttle and then punch it, so obviously turbo lag, but it smokes pretty good. Like almost enough to not see the car behind me. Does it every time. I know tuned i would get smoke with turbo lag, but i didnt think stock was supposed to smoke at all??
Its the 2003 in my sig, engines pretty much stock besides studs and egr delete. Blue spring, 3 month old riffraff IC boots (all tight), Ficm was rebuilt under 2 years ago by ficm repair guy - reads 48v all the time, 1 month old Motorcraft air filter, turbo was cleaned in the last 5k - mechanic said it looked great, OEM fuel filters - changed every 10k. Truck runs great lately. Only thing i can think of to mention is pretty bad hesitation from a stop, seems like it takes quite a bit of throttle to get the thing going but not sure if thats normal or what. Once i gain a few mph seems to take off like a rocket though.
Also in the morning when the engines cold (doesnt matter if its 10* or 80* outside), my truck surges right at 2000rpm while trying to go up a small hill. It is tough to make it over 25 mph, im sure i could but i just like to take it easy when its really cold
Any ideas? Dont want this to turn into something really bad, that i could have prevented..thanks

Mine did the same thing when I returned it to stock before I took it in for emissions, I just figured it was due to soot buildup in the EGR cooler and that when I returned it to stock the EGR valve started functioning again. For what its worth it wouldn't pass the opacity test running stock so I took it home and put the tune back on it and it passed. I see your EGR has been deleted so perhaps my thinking was wrong. I will be interested to hear the opinions of the other guys on this one.

If you're using Gearhead tunes that's most likely why. Their tunes are extremely clean for the kind of power they make. I have very little smoke out of my truck running the Atlas 40 and SRL Extreme. These trucks will always have some lag at low engine speed. You're trying to move an ~8,000 pound truck, big tires, and get a heavy-*** engine rolling. These things run a fairly good sized turbo and even with being a VGT it's still going to have some lag time. For a turbo of its size though the lag is fairly minimal IMO. If you haven't go try and drive a few diesel cars. They exhibit the same kind of lag and spool up characteristics our trucks do.

Mine would smoke on the stock tune with a stock FICM when I had the 4" straight exhaust. I guess it depends on a few things, like your base PCM tune. I'm just unsure why you'd want to use the factory tune anyways. The truck is such a turd on it. lol

This part of your post make me think something isn't right, did it do this with a tune on it, or am I reading something into it.

you dont notice a difference?
i noticed a difference on the canned sct tunes and from that i noticed a MASSIVE change with the srl+.
did you disconnect the batteries and let the transmission re-learn its shifting? dropping back to stock the truck still thinks it needs to be prepared for high power shifts when it doesnt need to.
