White Smoke
The truck starts up okay, with no discernable smoke. When I drive for a couple miles and start hitting the stop lights, there's a decent amount of white smoke when at idle and immediately upon acceleration. Other than that, the truck runs great with no noticable power loss and she sounds like a "Harley" truck should sound. Although I've got the after-market power add-ons, I really don't run the engine too hard. I don't race it, etc.
I took the truck to a mechanic (non dealer) who thought that the issue might be turbo related. He didn't think that I had a head gasket issue (which was my original concern, given the white smoke). The mechanic also messed around with the Bully Dog and shifted settings back to stock. I downloaded all updates and hooked the Bully Dog back up. I noticed that I had the following diagnostic error codes: P0487 and P1000. I understand that the P0487 is related to the EGR Throttle Position Circuit Control. That being said, I was wondering why the mechanic might have been fixated on a potential turbo issue. I've just joined the forum, but I've read much tonight about EGR cooler and oil cooler issues causing issues similar to what I'm facing.
I've got a couple questions: what do ya'll think is the most likely problem that I have? Once again, the white smoke only starts once the truck is warmed up and is only noticable at idle and take-off. Also, will I have issues if I simply shift the Bully Dog settings back to stock and take it in to the dealer?
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Mike
I would pull the EGR valve first and see how dirty it was. If you park at a downhill incline after driving it, you can check to see if you have any coolant in the intake (EGR cooler leak) under the EGR valve. Be prepared to clean the valve if it is dirty. The Tech folder has some good instructions. Mine was bad at 30k miles.
