Just replaced the lift pump on top of the engine on my 96 7.3. Its ticking very loud when you fire up the engine. You can here the tapping of the cam on the pump Is this normal? It is as loud as the engine. Will it go away? Should I be worried?
They are not suppose to tick like that? I've only installed two lift pumps in the last 5 years and both made a loud ticking noise. I thought it was odd that the first one did it now this one too? Both new airtex pumps.
Called parts stores until one guy said he worked on these engines and the pump needs to be primed. Went to try to bleed any air out but when I started the engine the noise was gone. Problem solved.
Many break on installation. Or so I've seen over the years.
My buddy replaced his and the plunger broke as he was replacing it. It fell down into the hole and was hung up perfectly on the cam. Luckily he was able to get it out somehow, but i could see that becoming a very bad headache...
