Yeah, I know, should go with a BTS, but can't happen, so going with an HD4R100. Thought I would have to order but there is one in town and I'm getting it this afternoon.
Aside from renting a trans jack and a hoist, any weird things to look out for?
I am thinking it is pretty straight forward, so if the rain doesn't hamper me too much will be done Friday if not sooner. Supposed to storm tomorrow.
And yes, I will be installing a 6.0 cooler with it.
The upper bellhousing bolt on the passenger side is tough to reach, especially if you have a large diameter exhaust. Removing the downpipe makes it easier. You might also want to address any up-pipe issues at the same time, they're a lot easier to get to while the trans is out.
If your transmission has the deep pan (4X4) make sure the jack you rent has supports that are tall enough to reach. The jack I bought doesn't quite fit the pan .
Thanks so far. Stock pan, have a Diesel Site filter, and this is a pre-emptive strike. I tow a 5th wheel out west, trans might have been done before but no idea who did it, it has been at least 70k miles at best and 7 years (not sure what happened 1st 140k), and I made the decision to replace on my terms.
Yipee.
On edit, I thought the pan reference was aftermarket deep.

Reason: add info.
No, if you ever order a new filter get the one for the deep pan. Other models do have a different pan but superduties are deep pan. Up pipes should be addressed. Even stock ones would be leaking by now. Its a snap with trans out.
I think when Ford does a tranny on our trucks they also insert a Magnafine filter in the line from the cooler to the tranny...I hope I remembered that correctly .

They don't do that anymore. They now require oil/air cooler replacement.

I was toying with removing my magnafine filter on the next fluid change to make room for the derale bypass. I like using the magnafine though so I can skip dropping the pan every other time to change the main tranny filter.
I was thinking if the converter grenaded, the magnafine would save my oil to water cooler in the radiator so I could avoid replacing that at the time the tranny is rebuilt. Certainly would replace the oil to air cooler and upgrade at the same time, if not sooner.
Good luck Tom. I'd be your tool pusher if I was there. What's your plans for the core? Selling it back?
Yeah, 1,000 bucks, it's going back.
Thanks, can't tell you how valuable someone to fetch tools would be. I need to train my wife... well maybe not. I think I have done a couple of hundred situps so far.
Back to it.
If your doing this by your self I would advise you to drop the T case first.
A little late but thanks Mike. It's done, and I pulled the transfer case back a little and hung it with a couple of good tie downs, stretched across the frame rails. Turned out okay. You were right for sure, that is a lot of weight and length to move around.
A huge pita to do but glad it's done.
