Hey guys, I put a 26 row cooler on my truck and it cools nicely. empty I usually run around 130-140 F with outside air from 80-90 here in FL. My father inlaw dug up an ATS deep trans pan he bought for his 6.0 long ago and never installed. He's basically giving it to me. My question is... Once I read somewhere in ciberland that you can 'overcool' a 4R100 to where the oil temp is not warm enough for the trans. to function like it should. And they were saying all these idiots with big fans and bigger coolers don't understand transmissions. Is this real???? is anyone running these 2 together? thanks.
I am no transmission expert or anything. Hopefully Mr. Mark Kovalaski (sorry if I butchered it) will chime in with his expert advice. I dont think you can overcool one of these transmissions.
Don't worry. Adding a deep pan only increases capacity. It doesn't do any significant cooling for the trans fluid whatsoever.

Exactly. Mark was discussing this in another thread. The pans don't provide any extra cooling. He also said that you can run at cooler temps, but should try to bring it up above 150 to properly boil off any water that might accumulate in the fluid.
You can overcool a transmission, but not in Florida. A bigger pan will only make the underside of the trans look good, it doesn't do anything to help the trans.
I have the over size pan and the 6.0 cooler, I agree with Mark it does nothing but increase capacity. It takes longer to warm up but does nothing for overall operating temperatures.
my trans works fine with fluid temps of -30 on january mornings?
I'm sure you probably CAN overcool a trans but adding a little bit of extra capacity (especially if you're working the trans hard daily) isn't going to do anything but help.

Yep.. Mine takes forever just get above 100 in the winter. I put a piece of cardboard in front of the cooler to try and get the temp up a bit.
I'll be putting my stock pan back on when I do my next filter change.
Hmmm.... Well, I wonder if I should even mess with it.. that means more fluid I gotta add every change, and if it doesn't do anything, whats the point??? Even with it in the 90's out.. I can haul 12k and it never goes over 160F ??? It sounds like a waste of time to me, another thing to hit my head on down there.....
