2001 F150, I'm on a trip for work, and have lost my keys . I didn't have any spares to begin with. I'm getting a quote of $160 from a locksmith to come out and cut me a key and program it for PATS, obviously I'd like to do better if it's possible. Anyone know anything?
I'm out of the range for the dealer to give me a code from the VIN, what does a locksmith have that can read the code, and they can cut a key, and I'm good to go? I'm completely surprised that dealerships don't have this capability.
The locksmith has a fancy little programmer looking tool that plugs into the OBDII plug. $160 isn't bad considering they are coming to you. I just got one done for my '09 that was $100 done at the locksmith ($50 for the key and $50 for the program). You might as well have him do 2 keys then buy a few cheap blanks off ebay and program them yourself. You have to have 2 keys to do any more yourself. My guess is the dealers don't bother with doing them out of the VIN year range because it isn't economically feasible. MY Dealer wanted the same amount as the locksmith but I had to order the key then set a time up fr the shop to program, instead went to the locksmith and was done in 5 minutes.
