I had an ongoing problem with not being able to fill the radiator more than 2" below the fill line without it going into limp mode and losing fluid out the cap.
Cap 1; stock cap with 160k miles started giving sweet smell of hot anti-freeze.
Cap 2; bought new cap but wasn't holding pressure.
Cap 3; bought another new cap from a different auto store just to make sure but it turned out same as #2
Cap 4; this one held pressure but didn't fit and just spun.
Cap 5; this one tested good and finally fixed the problem after a month of frustration and changing parts.
I just took it for a rigorous drive down the freeway with it filled to the min fill line and it is good. Hint; if your cap makes a hissing sound after you turn the engine off, or it is a little wet below the cap, or you smell the sweet smell of hot anti-freeze, or you take the cap off 10 minutes later and there is no pressure, I would borrow a free cap/radiator tester and test it. It wasn't until I borrowed a radiator tester that I discovered it came with a cap tester so I figured I might as well test the caps while I was at it.
What brand were you buying? I don't want to repeat what you went through. I'll avoid it like meadow muffins!
They had different names from different stores that I wasn't familiar with but they all looked the same and I saw the word Stant somewhere but I would test it with their cap tester when you buy one or take it back and test it, then ask for another free one.
I just replaced mine with a Motorcraft cap from Rockauto.
Should be good.....the older ones were made skimpy and didn't last. If I wasn't such a tightwad I could have gotten one and saved a month of wondering what the problem was. Who would think 2 new caps were both bad? The second one said Stant on the box and it was a clone of the first one. I filled it up to the top line just for giggles and it holds real well. No hissing, no dribbling.....yeah!!
