AOD or E40D How do you tell the difference?

Hey guys I have a 92 F-150 that was manufactured in 91. I have been told that some of the early 92's had AOD's before ford made the swap to E40D. Don't know if thats right thats just what I've been told. The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking about a mass air conversion and it makes a big difference. Any help is appreciated.

Look at your gear selector.

P R N (D) 2 1 - E4OD (1992+ will have OD cancel switch on column shifter) (1989-1991, OD cancel switch on dash, right side of steering column)

P R N (D) D 1 - AOD

P R N D 2 1 - C6

Or you can count the pan bolts.

17 pan bolts - C6

14 pan bolts - AOD

20 pan bolts - E4OD

Well, if you can't figure it out after the previous posts, there's not much hope for you.

The E4OD is a good trans, and pretty tough, but when they mess up its pricey.

If my AOD gives out I can rebuild it for around $600 or less

The problem with the E4OD is it shifts WAY to soft! Any tranny that shifts really ssoft like that will never live long.

That's why if I have to have an auto, it MUST be a C6, I will refuse anything else! The hell with OD!

Just get a Punisher valvebody and make the E4OD shift like it should.

Guy on NLOC had 188k miles on his and it also made 843hp and 936 torque. He had a Punisher valvebody.

Mine lived a long unhappy life (200k miles) being constantly neglected. Take some care of her and she'll take care of you.

I am just curious on what makes you say that. In your opinion, what makes the E4OD so much better than the AOD?

For one, the AOD is rated for 750lb/ft of torque, the E4OD is rated for 1000lb/ft.

I adjusted my TV cable to hold the gear longer and shift stiffer

And on the AOD if the TV cable isn't adjusted right you'll burn the AOD up.

Benefit to the AOD is that it will bolt up to any small block ford, and Lokar sells kits to put the AOD behind a Carburated engine. (If you don't have the carb kickdown bar for the AOD)
