I was in the area of my Ford dealer running some errands, and since the DEF message says "under 1/2 full" I decided to stop in a get some DEF. I told the parts guy I'll take 3 gallons. I then said I haven't used my "first free DEF fill yet" but I didn't feel like waiting. He brought out a case and said, "have a nice day" That was my free DEF. Awesome customer service.
Glad your's was "smoother" than mine. My warning came up the other day (800 miles to go). I had printed off the coupon that was posted in one of the threads a while back as I hadn't gotten anything from Ford directly. Anyhow, I called first to make sure they would take the coupon - "Yep - no problem". Pulled into the service station and was directed to the "quick service area". Spoke to the sales person there and he tried telling me it was tied to the first service. I said - I'm only at 5400 miles, I don't need a service. I just need the DEF refill. Clearly - the two coupons are different". He says - well, we've been doing these with the services. Then procedes to tell me that my miles are low for needing the DEF. He then goes across to apparently the service manager, then comes back and says "Okay - we can do this. Should have you out of here in about 30 to 45 minutes". My expression was "WTF" - 30 to 45 minutes to put 5 gallons of liquid in the truck. Well - it just about took that freaking long. Oh -well, got 5 gallons of DEF for free (at least I hope if was filled to the top)
Speaking of - is there a "fill level" somewhere to been seen?

Your dealer experience is exactly why I was just going to pay for my DEF and get out of there. I knew it wouldn't be a quick in and out to top off the DEF.
Good grief.
You should have taken that time to discuss EGT's and NO(x) where more NO is produced when the engine is at higher temps therefore using more DEF to combat the additional NO produced by that hot engine.
It takes all of 10 minutes to add nearly 4 GAL and that includes the extra time spent making sure you properly tighten the spout/lid on the BlueDEF containers.
Of course you know this but I'm repeating it for the heck of it.
My truck has 4300 miles on it as of this morning. I've been getting the DEF mileage countdown for about a week now and was planning on waiting for my first service. But, I'm heading out of town today and my DEF warning says 435 miles. I'll be going by my dealership this morning for my first free refill. I guess it also helps that my brother-in-law is the service manager, so I should be in and out fast.
My free DEF fill was done with my first (also free) service @ 5k. I was told that they filled it from a 100-gal container with a pump, and that Ford was tracking how much DEF these new engines were taking. Of course, that was back in October... they might be doing things differently now. I neglected to tell the service manager that I had already put in 2.5 gallons at that point. It obviously wasn't full from the factory... no idea how the usage data could be of any worth to Ford if they aren't filling them to a specific capacity on delivery. Anyway, just wanted to put in my 2 cents on my experience.
Is the first refill a ford wide thing or does it depend where you bought the truck?
It's a Ford program that was there for all 2011 SDs purchased before 12/31/2010. If you bought your truck after that it does not apply.
Where you bought it from doesn't matter.
DON'T go to the Ford dealer for a DEF fill unless it's the free one. You can get the stuff for around $4.00/gallon at some stores and less than that at certain truck stops with DEF pumps at the fuel islands.
