I am a medium level truck handy guy. I've had my 7.3 for almost a year, I have learned a lot. My next quest for information is going to be this oil. I put in Rotella T full syn 5-40 in April by the recommendation of my cousin with the same truck. He said he was going to attempt going for a year and getting the oil tested at his next change. I drive a lot so I am more concerned so I got a kit from black stone. My 2 questions are:
1. I need a way to get the oil out from the dip stick hole, I didn't buy the apparatus, suggestions? (Obviously I don't want to do the change)
2. They have a sample report which is spiffy, but it's greek to me. I want to know 'how many miles can I drive with this oil before it needs to be changed'. I can't really make a lot of sense of what information they will report. How do I interpret the data?
Welcome Joe, somebody will be by to tell you the gadget to retrieve your oil. To answer your second question, from the general consensus here and with my experience with syn. Rotella, you can go about 8000 miles safely without UOA. What I'd do is if your not ready yet to change your oil just wait till you get to the 8000 mile mark then grab a sample. Contact Blackstone and get the kit now, its free, you just pay when you send it in.

Reason: Added more info.
you can use piece of plastic tubing to go down the dip stick hole and use a suction gun.Cat sample kits and a couple others come with the tube, guess Blackstone ain't figgered it out yet

I know Blackstone wants the sample after you warm it up good. I just take the sample when I do a change. The only time I use the dipstick tube is if I need a sample between changes. If you are going to try to get maximum mileage from your oil I guess you better plan on taking samples from the dipstick. CAT charges for a pump too?
FWIR Blackstone has something called a TBN. It will let you know how much "life" you have left in your oil. If the TBN is good but you have high metals in your oil they will recommend a change.
You can go to Walmart or Advance Auto and get a Oklahoma credit card (tube with a squeeze bulb on it). LOL. No offense to our friends from the great state of OK>

If you don't want to wear out your 7.3L PSD faster than is necessary then I suggest you start by reading post #13 here...
...The "correct OCI" for "minimizing" engine wear depends "only" on how hard your engine has been run ...and on how efficiently your oil filter removes "abrasive particles" from the oil supply ...and whether you use "conventional oil" or "synthetic oil" has no bearing whatsoever on determining the correct OCI for a given engine ...and this is also the stated opinion of Blackstone!...
Walmart has a small suction pump in the marine dept for changing the lower unit oil in an outboard motor. its cheap and it works.
I just take my samples durring the oil change.
