Fuel Injection Pump

I have a 1992 7.3 diesel that has been having starting problems when it gets warm for a few years now. I've replaced everything I know to replace and talked to anyone I know to talk to, including a few shops. The verdict is that I need an injection pump.

Does anyone know of a good and reliable source to get one of these pumps for a reasonable price? So far every place I've found locally has been way out of our budget.

Thanks,
Steve

please, try and do a search before asking. page 2 and page 4 both have threads on this same thing. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ip-buying.html

Sorry. Steve's new to this forum thing so I did the searching for him. I didn't know to search for IP as I'm not the mechanical one, I do cosmetics.

Thanks for the link though.

You can also try Oriellys. They have remaned pumps as well for about the same price and it would be a local purchase. This makes returns if needed alot easier. Besides I prefer to keep my money as local as possible. I know they are a national chain store but the guys that work there live right here as well.

Thanks for telling me about O'Reilly's. There not one here but there is one about 50 miles north.

I searched and didn't find any answers to my next question. Does anyone know what is the difference between the up to 2/92 and from 3/92 pumps other than over $100 more? My truck was built 3/92.

List: Diesel Fuel Injector Pump - 1992 Ford F-250 | O'Reilly Auto Parts

Thanks again.

Steve

I think that was when the turbo option came in on these trucks. The turbo pump is different from the n/a pump.

Update - Thanks everyone.

We went witht he pump and installation kit from Pensicola Diesel. The guy there was very knowledgable and they don't even have a core charge on this particular pump. Should be here Friday, installed Saturday and if all is well, I'll let ya all know. If it doesn't go well, Steve'll be back with more questions.

Thanks again.

Ensure the Injection Pump Gear cover does NOT get removed ...

And just in case it's needed ...
Injection Pump Removal Basics.
  1. Unplug IP wires.
  2. Rotate Motor to TDC #1.
    1. Remove #1 Glow Plug.
    2. Place Finger over Glow Plug hole.
    3. Bump motor over until you feel air forced out.
    4. Hand turn motor to TDC. (Harmonic Balancer mark and Pointer)
    5. If you go past TDC, Do not rotate motor backwards, Rotate motor TWO revolutions by hand to TDC.
  3. Unhook Throttle linkage.
  4. Remove Throttle Return spring.
  5. Remove Throttle linkage bracket.
  6. Unplug High Idle Solenoid wire.
  7. Remove High Idle Solenoid.
  8. Unhook Return Line on IP.
  9. Remove Fuel Supply line.
  10. Unhook Injection lines at the Injectors.
  11. Remove Oil Filler Neck. (or IP gear bolt access cover)
  12. Remove three 12 point bolts holding drive gear to IP.
  13. Put a mark between IP and IP cover to preserve timing.
  14. Remove three nuts holding the IP to gear cover.
  15. Remove IP.
  16. Reverse steps for assembly.

-Enjoy
