I am looking at an Explorer as a replacement for a Chevy Trailblazer. Trailblazer seems to be having a lot of problems lately (still under extended warranty). Wife wants 3rd row seating and I don't like mini vans. I don't know what years had 3rd row seating, or how much room the occupants of the 3rd row actually get. Any other known problems with the Explorer that I should watch out for?
You'll be looking at 2002 and newer Explorers/Mountaineers/Aviators for the 3rd row of seating. Keep in mind that the cargo capacity is minimal when the 3rd row seat is in use, and there is not much padding for the 3rd row occupants.
As with most vehicles, getting a vehicle maintenance history may be the best thing to watch for when selecting a used vehicle. If the transmission was serviced regularly and it doesn't appear to have been used for towing most of its life, you'll probably be quite happy with the years of service it will deliver, assuming you continue to maintain it. If there are rattle noises in the engine (V6 or V8) don't let the seller convince you it's only a minor fix. It may be the timing tensioners beginning to fail.
arent the newer crossovers more fun for the family and more usable space with so much seating? if youre going new....look into all the options ford offers.
I bought my 06 because of the 3 rows, V-8 power and it could fit in my garage. Its my 3rd Explorer and I like the newer ones the best(98 XLT 4.0 SOHC and a 5.0 AWD). It tows moderate loads well (my boat) yet still gets around 23-25 mpg on highway (4x4 not awd). In city driving though that engine still drinks like a V-8.

If you really need the 3rd row seating for family, you might want to look at the Expedition or Navigator for a lot more seating and cargo space.
