Ranch Hand Bumper - Winch?

Well I feel pretty good at the moment.

I just found a used Ranch Hand "Legend" front bumper replacement for $350. It is in pretty good shape, paint has some scratches - but the paint is good for the most part and matches my truck. It also has the winch brackets.

Any recommendations on winches (my wife will probably kill me for asking)?

I have no clue on the winch thing(I don't 4x4)but that was a nice score on the bumper.

I would get atleast a 10K.

BTW I'm not real impressed with how the RH mounts to the frame. I pulled one off of a truck that was stuck!

This looks fairly stout to me. Two mounting plates (9" x 5") of 1/2 inch steel and four bolt holes. I think some half inch Grade 8 or 9 bolts and tack welding a few spots should be fine.

i have been told to multiply truck weight by 1.5 to get winch size. my truck weights 7400lbs without my toolbox and no one in it. so about 10000-12000 would do fine.

i don't know if i would tack weld the bolts cuz if u ever had to take it off u got to cut the bolts. i would say add some locktite and torque them. and if you are still worried, throw some paint on it.

Thanks - I had not heard the "safety factor" recommendation before.

Yeah - I did not mean to imply welding the bolts! I have always tack welded the bumper plate to the trucks mounting plate - along the edges in 4 spots (spot weld on all 4 sides). It is fairly easily ground down for removal.

As far as winch brands go, in my opinion, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go with a Warn. You'll never have any doubt about the quality with a Warn. Other brands seem to use a lot of plastic and what not, Warns are SOLID! If I'm gonna spend the money on a winch big enough for this truck, it's going to either be a M12, M15, or 16.5ti. These 3 are probably the top 3 winches on the market for our sized trucks hands down.

I have the warn 9000i. It was cheaper than the other big ones, and has done everything I wanted it too. I remember when the 8,000 lb was the only thing out there and got the job done.. Down side to the larger winches is shorter cable length. Guess it depends on what you plan on pulling. But warn is the top brand..
Ranch hand is a heavy built bumper and that sure is a great price!

Yeah I actually had a Warn M8000 on my truck for a while simply just because I already had the winch from when I had my Tacoma and the Warn Trans4mer came on my truck when I bought it. I had to use it once when I got stuck in a ditch last winter and it worked just fine. But from what the guys at the local 4WD shop told me, it's not that the smaller once can't do it, it's just not good for them to be pulling 85% or more of their max capacity every time their used. As far as cable length on the bigger winches goes I agree, the bigger ones don't have long enough cable. However, you can by synthetic cable that's supposed to be much better and safer to use and you can get a smaller diameter for a larger weight capacity. They're pretty stout.

Just checked out Warn's website and there's only 10' of difference in wire rope between the heavy duty winches and the smaller ones.

Also, just checked out Winchline's website (when I go synthetic that's who I'm using) and their 3/8" synthetic cable is rated for almost 18,000lbs (7/16" steel cable is what comes on Warn's biggest winch, the 16.5ti, and it's rated the same as the winch's capacity) so Winchline's synthetic gives you about 1-2000 more pounds. Also, you don't have to worry about it kinking, it's much easier to handle, and it it snaps you don't have to look around to see if anyone has been decapitated.

I would just be worried if it just bolts to the flat flanges on the end of the frame where the stock bumper bolts. I pulled one of those flanges off!

AndeyHall; Great info on the synthetic rope. I had never heard of it before.. Yes bigger is better, but for occasional use such as I do I figured the 9,000i was adequate.Besides I am a cheap sob.lol... I thought there was 50' diff. between the larger and midsize winches. glad you corrected me..
Young gun; That is where I mounted mine too. It looked pretty solid, guess I will have to be careful and not use too many blocks (pulleys). Maybe just keep it to single line pull. Dosn't look like much room to mount anywhere else unless you use the reciever hitch on the back..Any reccomenfations on beffing up the front bumper area?
