AndeyHall; Great info on the synthetic rope. I had never heard of it before.. Yes bigger is better, but for occasional use such as I do I figured the 9,000i was adequate.Besides I am a cheap sob.lol... I thought there was 50' diff. between the larger and midsize winches. glad you corrected me..
Young gun; That is where I mounted mine too. It looked pretty solid, guess I will have to be careful and not use too many blocks (pulleys). Maybe just keep it to single line pull. Dosn't look like much room to mount anywhere else unless you use the reciever hitch on the back..Any reccomenfations on beffing up the front bumper area?
I really do think that installing the proper size and hardness bolts and washers and then tach welding the spaces (on all four sides) between the bolts will be more than adequate.
I tore a rear bumper off of a 7.3L once and did what I described above and was fine from that point on.
As far as the winch size - wow the M12 is expensive!

I fully agree. As little as I used my winch I wasn't worried at all about it being only an 8000 pounder. I wasn't trying to down your 9000, just not knowing how much bismic was going to use it, I didn't want to recommend anything smaller than a 12000 on a 8000+lb truck. And yeah, synthetic is the way to go. Smaller diameter so you can fit a lot longer line and the only thing you have to worry about is sharp edges, otherwise it's just as durable and way way safer and way easier to handle.

True on what type to recommend. Seems once you got one you find yourself using it more and more..Was tempted to recommend the new ones with the air compressor built in, but wow the price will give the avg. joe a heart attack...lol.. And I am going to look into that syntehtic rope..I am always leary of cable breakage.Had one take out the rear window of a tractor last year when it broke pulling a semi out of the sand.
Bismic; going to do some welding as you suggested just to be safe, thanks for the info..
My stepdad bought a mile marker 12k winch. 3yrs ago and uses it alot It has been more than enought for him. He puts up metal buildings and other creative ventures. Warn is a good brand. If your going to use it all the time. If your going to use it 2-3 time a week. Mile marker is a decent winch and is a lot cheaper. If it were me I wouldn't mount a winch on the front of my truck. I would have a reciever on the front and make a portable mount. My stepdad built his front replacement and it mounts to the factory bolt holes as well as a piece of angle that goes into the frame rails and uses the hole that attach the tow hooks. We welded nuts in there to make it easier to work with. So far it has been solid. If you get a winch don't skimp. Get some deep cycle batteries. A ****** block and over size your power and ground wires. It would also be a good idea to use the highest elivated idle for winching. Good score I'm jelous. I've been searching for one for a few months. Getting close to deer season.
my uncle and cousins are loggers and they have used mile marker hydraulic winches for years , my dad just put one on his powerstroke... they run off of the power steering pump, it will run underwater since no solenoids to burn up either...

Ironman, not being to much of a smart *** but why would you put your truck underwater and how will the power steering pump run if it is underwater?
not saying that i would put my powerstroke underwater... I have crept into a washed out culvert that was underwater in my old f 150... bumper was underwater and fan was acting like a prop on a boat, but it never died... put it in reverse and backed out... i didn't do it on purpose, and the winch on the front bumper would have done me no good..., i was just making a statement about the winch... it will run underwater, you can spool it out and reel it back in all day long and not burn up the selonoids...
Check out mile marker's line of hydraulic winches - no worries about overheating the winch or killing the batteries - as long as the engine is running - you're golden! The US military threw out all their warn winches on the humvees and went mile marker.

The bumper I had on my last SD was a custom one my brother built. No only did we mount it to the stock bumper hole we also mad a plate that sandwiched the frame between 1/4" chromoly plate and the factory tow loops.
