This weekend I'm changing the timing belt on my 98 Mazda B2500 2.5. Everything I read says I need to have a tensioner tool. (49 UN01 067). Can I get away with just using a pry bar? I did buy the kit which comes with the pulley bearing.
What part of the engine do you want to pry against? and might break in the process? Then you have to tighten the adjusting bolt while holding the tensioner against spring pressure to the furtherest posititon clockwise.
I have used a pry bar for years. I pry it back using the big bolt that holds the spring for the tensioner as a lever point. Then tighten the bolt down until I am ready to tension the new belt
I was trying to get the procedue for spreading the tension properly across the whole belt. My manual says to put the belt on and allow the tensionor to apply tension but don't tighten the bolt until the engine is cranked over by hand for two revolutions then the bolt is tightened.
First you cannot turn the engine over with tensioner loose it will skip teeth every time. Turn the tensioner loose and tighten the bolt turn engine thru 2 times by hand loosen tensioner and then retighten. Turn through 2 more times and check timing marks to insure they are still in the right place. It they are then you are good to go.
