I don't see any obstacle to putting one on and it shouldn't hurt anything being there. The only problem I see is actually using it. A 2wd isn't going to be pushing much snow before the rear tires start to spin.
Its all in what you plan on plowing with it. Parking lots you should do ok. I learned to plow with a old 1 ton dump that was 2 wheel drive. We just put about 3/4 of a ton of sand in the bed and went. We mainly did the parking lots there at work with little to no troubles. You just have to keep on top of snow storms more so as you will have a harder time with deep or wet snow.
Cant be harder on it then a explorer with a snow plow. Here with the job market in the trash if they can put a plow on it they do! I have seen jimmys, suburbans, explorers, raingers, S-10s with plows. There is a guy doing parking lots with a S-10 around here.... talk about hard on a truck!
Just keep in mind you will be at a disadvantage being 2 wheel. You will get stuck easier, have less pushing power, and will need weight for traction ( that will destroy MPG ). However if your planning to just do some small area or a couple easy flat drives , small parking lot it can be done.
Well I live in Iowa and sure as heck wouldn't run a plow on a 2wd... If you feel ambitious you could find a older truck with a 4x4 D60 or D50 on the front to swap yours to 4x4... I have picked up older trucks in the 87-91 range with thrown rods for $400 or less and got most my money back in salvage once i scavaged the 4x4 off them...

Just wanted to add that there is a drugstore in my town that plows their driveway with an old front-wheel drive station wagon. Wouldn't do it myself, but apparently it can work.

Just get a locker or posi and whenever you see wood at the side of the road, pick it up and leave it in the bed until you need it as firewood. The 2WD may help in parking lots anyway since it'll turn tighter and the ABS will work better.
Some people give BFG AT's a bad reputation, but I have used them for 10 years with out problems. I usually have run 35x 12.50's. Depending on conditions I have plowed in 2wd.
I have heard that BFG A/T's are good in the snow, also cooper discoverer atr are really good in snow and ice.
one thing to remember about posi and auto lockers is that when you are on slick terrain and on a slope near a ditch, when the rear end breaks lose, there is no longer anything holding it in place and the rear end will tend to slide into the ditch or curb. And with an posi or an auto locker there is nothing you can do about it. With an open diff, only 1 tire breaks lose leaving the other tire to keep the rear end from sliding.
Just wanted to mention that for consideration.
My grand father hates posi, he tells a story of the only posi truck he ever owned, he went down a muddy road pulling his 5th wheel and it turned out to be a dead end and when he tried to back up, the rear end broke lose and slide into the ditch leaving him stuck and stranded in a torrential down poor for some time. Of course, all this could be avoided by 4x4, but he believes that it only gets you further before you get stuck. Haha cant ever win
