Plow Opinions needed

I have an '04 F250 Reg cab 8' bed with a 5.4 and I am in need of a plow.
Reccomendations from experience?
I see alot of Fisher plows in my area.
I also have access to a very reputable Boss Plow dealer.
Plow will only be used for clearing driveways and a very small commercial lot.

isnt it the fisher plows that have the seperate light rack that stays on the truck?
boss is a great plow but i think the get to complicated.

I prefer western, thats what i run there simple to fix if somthing goes worng. The plow has a very quick dismount/remount. There also very universal.
Are you going with a straight blade or a Vplow?

I am looking at 8' straight blade plows.
Both the Fisher and the Boss are quick disconnect, all the headgear stays with the blade when not in use.
Both are very user friendly.
I have narrowed it down to these two simply based on availability in my area as far as install/service after the sale.
The Boss plow has an optional POLY (meaning plastic) heavy duty reinforced blade. I like that option because the salt destroys the steel ones and they need a repaint every year for those of us that care what they look like too!

Well there are positives and negatives to both poly and steel like you said the salt wont destroy them but over time even the HD polys crack with enough hits to the curb lol. in the end its your choice id check with both very well. look at prices of replacement parts to. such as cutting edge and for sure trip spings. Id also get the rubber flap that goes on top of the blade sorry i cant think of the name of it, but it keeps the snow from comming up and over the plow.

Have you looked at used plows? A new Boss plow is nice, but the price can be hard to swallow for plowing a driveway and a couple small lots. I speak from experience. The only reason I bought a new Boss plow is that used ones on Craigslist are very limited up here. I would think you would have a wider selection anywhere down in the lower 48.

Not sure what you mean by that. Western has changed their mount system 3 times in the last two decades. I was able to find some very nice, older (conventional mount) Western plows for a reasonable price, but was told in no uncertain terms by the Western dealer up here that they were impossible to mount on my truck - the parts are simply not available any more. Even some of the newer uni-mount plows would be economically impractical to mount by the time you bought all of the adapters to fit it on the current ultra-mount system.

Used Boss plows are tough to come by around here, which I thinks tends to speak well for the plow. Fishers are everywhere but they all need work.
I can get an 8' Boss installed for $4400 right now. Fishers are nearing $6k installed!!!!
As far as the poly blade is concerned the blades have alot more reinforcement behind them to compensate.
Which Boss plow do you own? How lng have you had it?

Man, that’s a good price! I got a 7”6” steel, straight blade, super-duty. I paid $5700 installed, but we get raked on shipping for everything up here! I’ve only had the plow installed for a few weeks, but have already used it several times. All I can say is that Boss plows are sweet! And the mounting system is the cat’s meow! Obviously I can’t speak for long term reliability and maintenance costs though, but like you everything I hear about Boss is positive.

I would think the 8’ poly super-duty would be plenty well built. I don’t have any experience with Fisher.

One thing you may want to consider with Boss is the optional joy-stick controller. The standard paddle type controller seemed too awkward for me, though several people I know swear by them. The joy-stick just feels way more intuitive, like a video game. Unfortunately, you have to pay extra. For all the money I dropped on the plow it would have been nice to have a choice on controllers, but the joy-stick costs about $150 extra. It also took a little work to mount it in my cab (I didn’t want to shell out yet another $60 for the “mounting kit” – which is nothing more than a few stamped sheet-metal brackets), but in the end, well worth it IMO.

Either is fine. Sounds to be a decent price on the Boss.

Dealer support and parts are a key factor too.

Have them install a snow deflector. Buy some extra fluid, and a spare solenoid.

Then get some Fluid Film. Apply to the manifold, all pins, fittings, connections and the moldboard.

I know you said you were going either Boss or Fisher, but I have a Western 7'6" contractor series straight with the quick mount on my 2002 F350 CCSB 5.4 6spd, and it plows GREAT!! I love the on-off quick feature! I hardly every carry it around till it actually snows, then 2 minutes and it's ready to plow! It is 4 years old, and no issues at all! If you expect to do alot of back dragging, then stick with a heavy plow (ie steel). If you are not, then the poly is fine. I have a few friends with ploy plows (boss and hinicker) and they cannot do alot if they try to back blade. While the heavy western does a great job! If your snow is the dry/blowing snow, I would recommend a top rubber skirt deflector, as the 5.4 does not like getting alot of dry powdery snow packed up into the engine bay, then thaw, and causes misses on the COP plugs.
Hope this helps.
