Hey, i'm having the same problem with my ranger. I have an 89 Ranger with the 2.9EFI, and i keep failing NOx emissions in NJ. I have changed Plugs, Fuel filter, and the O2 sensor. Those didn't help, nor should they have. I read that when excessive NOx is produced, it means the engine is running hot because these unburned gasses are not being returned to be burned.
So my question, Where is my EGR valve? I couldn't find it. It should look like a flying saucer right?
Lowering your NOx can be achieved in a number of ways. The easiest is to fill up with HIGH OCTANE before the emmissions test. Also, alcohol in the gas (gas line anti freeze such as methanol, and/or isopropanol, and/or ethanol) helps. Also, having the emmissions checked on a day when the RELATIVE HUMIDITY is up close to 100% if you can believe that (H2O is one of the best anti-knock compounds, and also reduces NOx). Do you ever hear any pinging?? If yes, then retarding your ignition timing JUST A DEGREE OR TWO may also help.
Ken, I'm amazed that the '89 has no EGR! I just learned over the past couple days that not all engines have knock sensors, now I'm learning that not all of them have EGR! Man! I need to do some catching up!
Well, yea i have been getting a pinging when i fill it up with regular. so i switched to midgrade and it helped. I'll check the timing out to see if thats it. thnks for all the help.
If your 2.9 ranger EFI is like my 87 BII well the EGR valve is under where your gas pedal linkage hooks to the throttle body. There is a plate over top of it. There are 2 bolts that hold it on and also there is a good size vaccum hose that hooks to the front of it and a smaller one in the back of it. Hope this helps ya
86-87 have egr valve 88-90 and i think all the way to 92
