I am getting ready to drop my fuel tank and replace the fuel pump in my 2003 Expy. I have read the threads on here how to do it and read the shop manual and it appears to be pretty straight forward. My only question is the Ford manual states to use a special tool to un-hook the fuel lines, and a special tool to remove the pump from the top of the tank Are these really needed and can it be done easily with normal shop tools? Any other difficult issues I should be aware of before starting? Any help/advice appreciated.
You need the fuel line disconnect tool to remove the fuel lines from the filter. You really need that one. Its not very expensive, and if you ever need to change the fuel filter again in the future you will be glad you already have it. As for the fuel lines on the fuel pump itself, we just used a regular flat blade screwdriver to open em up and it worked just fine.
I suggest you use a brass punch for removing the lock ring holding the pump to the tank. You don't want to risk a stray spark when you're doing this work.
BTW, here's where a conventional analog VOM is preferred over a digital VOM. After you put the new pump in, AND BEFORE YOU LIFT THAT SUCKER BACK INTO POSITION, hook up the electrical, switch the key to on, and observe a "needle swing" from your attached analog VOM to the new pump. From experience, it's no fun doing this job over.
