I just noticed that the oil cap on my engine was missing today. It could not have been off for more than a week or so. I was wondering how much damage could've been done to my engine. I only drive the truck about 14 miles a day to and from work. Should I change my oil asap, I just did one 2 weeks ago and the engine is only 700 miles old on a rebuilt 351 Windsor. Thanks for any input!!!
I'm not a mechanic so this is just a guess, but it seems that if you haven't lost a lot of oil volume, the biggest danger is allowing dirt and other crap to enter the engine through the open fill. If it were me I'd change that oil and filter and send the old oil off for analysis. You will show some wear metals due to the fact that its a recent rebuild, but it will give you an idea as to how much dirt (si) entered the motor.
I'm not a mechanic either, but if it were mine, I'd do what mikemc says. Then I'd change the oil and filter AGAIN after driving it another 500 miles or so. You have a new motor there and oil and filters are cheap in comparison. Just my 02.
The oil filter has probably already picked up anything that could cause harm circulating through the engine. But I agree with everyone else. I would change the oil and filter for peace of mind. The PCV valve keeps the crankcase on a slight vacuum, so the open oil filler would suck in dust.
