Need Some Header Advice

Well, I am new owner of a not-so-new 1969 F250 4x4, 4spd granny low, that I absolutely love. It's got some body work coming, but the rust is minimal and I'm looking forward to taking this truck from beater to daily driver This is my first trip into the Classic Ford Truck world and am loving the forums here!

I have done some searching on the for the answer to the header question and have seen a variety of responses...

It's got rebuilt 390 going in this week (the 360 was shot, so I figured as long as I was rebuilding, why not go a little bigger). It has the option of the secondary tank on the driver's side, though its not installed at this time. The existing stock manifold is leaking and is in pretty bad shape, so I have been pondering headers.

I looked up Hookers, Hedmans, and Flowtech...spent time on the Summit site, Jegs and a few others and they all seem to have options. I am not opposed to those selections, however, with all the starter issues people are posting and all the trouble getting them to fit, I'm a bit hesitant to jump in...Is there really a good option for this truck? I am planning on getting the extra tank back in there shortly & I'll be installing the headers on my own and taking it to a shop for the rest.

Any body happy with what they've got? Any help figuring out the least problematic option would be fantastic.

...And I am prepared to go higher $$ over potential problems...

check into sanderson headers? buddy had some header for his 400 ford and they looked great. I know they do older stuff and you engine might fall into their catagory. Good luck and drop a message if it works out. Also doug thorley headers is another to check into.

I have been running Hookers for about 12 years now, can't remember Hi or Super Comps. There were no fit issues with my 2wd. A couple things that I would absolutely recommend is an new starter and starter blanket. The passenger side has to be completely removed to replace the starter.

With a 4wd you may need to look at shorties. You may want to add you gas tank and hitch (if you are using one) before installing the exhaust.

I only found one set of headers that would fit the 4x4 highboy configuration....I think they were by flowmax.....the engine mount will be in the way and most will not fit....

As far as the starter goes, my truck has no issues, there is plenty of clearance to install and/or remove the starter....just takes a little twist action to get it in position.

are you opposed to fenderwell style? puts the exhaust on the outside of the frame. away from starters, gas tanks etc. the downside is you gotta cut a hole in the inner fenders for the tubes to pass through. mad dog headers and l & l products make them, as well as others. makes for a mean looking engine bay!

Thanks for the responses....The gas tank will be going in this week and I already got the hitch on it I hadn't considered the fenderwell style. Did you have any problems once you got them installed?

With the shorties is there enough clearance over all?
