a 1995 EB with a 5 liter from a dead stop makes a slight thump type sound when starting off or coming to a complete stop.
I am looking to buy this and not sure if it is something serious such as a rear or tranny issue.. almost sounds like something hits when torque is applied and released from giving it gas.
anyone else have anything like this?

Why would it come from the engine bay? u-joints are under the truck, and the engine mounts are under the engine attached to the chassis. The symptoms you describe point towards the parts i already stated, but if you think it's something else, then keep looking, good luck!.

Engine mounts and u-joints are the most likely cuase for this issue. A few other areas to check after that would be the yolks on the t-case and rear end. If its none of the above, look at simple stuff. Is the battery mounted securely? How about the spare tire mount, is it loose or does it have alot of play because the latch is worn? You would be surprised the things that will make noise in an old truck. But I have to agree with Encho, 9 times out of 10, the problem you are describing will be a mount or u-joint.
