Hey All! On my 1999 Mountaineer V-8 AWD i noticed a thumping sound when driving it sound like its coming from the left side, at a low speed i hear it well when i come to a complete stop its not making noise, i was thinking maybe the balljoints? Any ideas or has anyone run into this problem with their Mountaineer or Explorer? Hope someone can help..... Thanks!
Sounds like ball joints or possibly CV joints. I think worn CV's have more of a "clicking" sound though when in a turn. I just had the hub and bearing assemblies replaced on my 2000 Mountaineer (V8 AWD). The sound of the bearings failing was more of a pulsating hum while rolling. Very noticable at 45 mph. To me, a "thump" type sound means movement between metal parts (where there shouldn't be) muffled by rubber boots, bushings, grease or something like that. Worn control arm bushings or sway bar bushings might produce that kind of sound. Not likely though. Do you feel anything through the steering wheel or the break peddle? Is the steering OK? Get the wheel off the ground and check for play when rocking the tire in all directions. Have somebody look for movement at the ball joints (upper and lower) and other suspension and drive train parts. There was lots of play in the wheel of my truck and movement easily visible. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it! Like an expensive mechanic! Good luck.
I have the same truck 98 Mount'eer...165k miles 5.0 liter. Inspect your tires well. I always have had a small thump noise on the front left side. Repair guys could not find anything wrong with joints, bearing, ..etc. But when I rotated tires..the noise disappeared. Try it out!!
Yeah i can feel the noise coming through the steering wheel when driving around 30-40 mph its not a humming sound its a thumping sound like you need shocks or something like that, i was wondering if it was the control arm bushings or ball joints. I havent checked the tire off the ground to see if there is any play with the tire but i will try that, any other suggestions?
