Neither is good.
just a point of fact, the cetane number is actually the opposite of the above. Again referencing the PDF I linked earlier:

The cetane number is a measure of how readily the fuel starts to burn (autoignites) under diesel engine conditions. A fuel with a high cetane number starts to burn shortly after it is injected into the cylinder; therefore, it has a short ignition delay period. Conversely, a fuel with a low cetane number resists autoignition and has a longer ignition delay period.
your other statement is patently correct, though. a significant delta from optimum, in either direction, isn't good. To that point, I wonder what the tolerances are... if the PCM has a way to adjust injection timing, I'd think that the published 40-52 cetane range of readily available fuel should be okay. 40, of course, would warrant a cetane booster.

I guess my goal here is to find a target fuel quality, and find a consistent source, then adjust the fuel I get from that source to something as close to target as possible. Originally, I wanted a way to buy "bottled insurance" in the form of an additive. Now, I'm thinking that I could feasibly run into higher than normal cetane fuel in the wild, and unknowingly treat it into the "grossly above optimum" range. At this point I think I'm going to do my best to stick to Chevron for my road trip and drop the cetane booster in favor of a lubricity treatment. Thanks, Ford, for giving me Sirius Travel Link

Opps.,. you are, of course, correct.. I got it mixed up.

Thanks for fixing errata.

Low cetane = slow to combust

High cetane = readily combust.

F.Y.I. I just read on the chevron website that Texas, like California, has a minimum cetane requirement of 48 in it diesel according to TxLED. Here is the link. Chevron Products: Fuel School Answers

Unfortunately, this program only covers 110 counties in eastern Texas. Glad i'm in one of the 110... http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/implemen...eandiesel.html
