Ok, I have searched and read, but I am still curious. Is anybody running an aluminum radiator? My 74 F100 with a 460 originally had a supercooler in it. Because of some suspension mods I have made, I am trying to trim any excess weight off the front end I can. Im curious what others think of going with an aluminum radiator? I have all the faith in the world the large supercooler can cool my 460, but I would like some opinions please. Also, if you are running an aluminum radiator, which one? Thanks in advance.
I love mine, it cools better than my original and mine was fairly new about 5 years old (not a super cooler). I have a be cool that bolts up to the 4 stock mounting holes but is a little pricy, thats in my 72, and I have one of the universal 31" core summit rads. that I had to make custom mounts for in my 78 both have elec. fans also, but even on a hot 97' day my trucks will heat up fan comes on and temp goes down and repeat. I did do rad and fans at same time, so I dont know which one is better fans or rad. Out on the highway and middle of winter the fans hardly ever come on, I'm in PA not quite as bad as Minn.
I'm using an aluminum too. I am very happy with it. We travel in the summer into Baja Mexico, fully loaded with the boat on top, and it comes through like a champ. Like many of the racers, off roaders, I use an electric fan that drops temp within minutes. I also like to carry, like the racers, an extra Ford Taurus fan. It is two speed, comes with shroud, is easy to find at any j.yard, and it is 2 speed, moving huge amounts of air, about 4500 cfm. It does take some fabricating to install, but there are pics online to use as a guide. There are also elec. companies who make the relays for installing the Taurus fans.
It's a summit racing rad. The Taurus fan is a puller. I have two fans on my radiator. One is a puller from a Ford Windstar, and on the really hot days, or when towing/hauling, I also use a small 12" pusher which has a quick connect I just plug in under the hood. I don't think you'll find a fan that moves more air than the Taurus fan, but fitment should be considered.
You can find the Taurus fans on ebay or at the j.yard for less. Or you can go to the after market. I prefer oem fans for quality. With the aftermarket, I would be cautious of the words: 'Made in China.'
