1981 bronco with 79 400 engine issues

I have a 1981 bronco with a 1979 351m/400 in it. I bought a cam for the 351m and installed it and i went to put the distributor in, and it sits all the way down in the block, but does not catch on the teeth. why? any suggestions? also, do i need to buy cam for a 400? and what distributor do i need to get, the 351m distributor, or 400 distributor? i know theres a difference, btu i dont know what exactly. any help is apreciated thanks

351M, 400, 429, and 460 all use the same dist along with bellhousing pattern and flywheel/flexplate. And the only difference between the 351M and 400 is stroke.

Compare the new and old cams side by side. Maybe you got a 351 W?
