High idle problem
High idle problem
I finished replacing my power steering pump. When I started it up the idle was around 1800 rpm. After a few miles of highway driving and normal operating temperature it's still high. Obviously I must have knocked a vac line or something while doing the pump. I've stared at it for hours and can't see anything. I can't hear vac leaks, the codes are no different (33 only but previously there), everything is back the way it was. I know this sounds crazy but any ideas? I just can't see what I did to cause it. Anyone ever forgot to reconnect something that caused this. There's not too much to replacing the pump so I'm stumped.
Well, first you need to check your vacuum to make sure it actually is out of specs. What's year, make, model and engine?
On my truck (87 F150 4.9), Code 33 is something along the lines of "EGR Valve opening not detected". I got that code cause my EGR Position Sensor wasn't torqued down tight enough so the vacuum leaked out when it was applied.
As far as a vacuum leak, you can spray vacuum lines and gaskets down with throttle body cleaner. If the engine sucks it in it will react to it, and you've found your leak.

Whoops! Forgot to mention, 1992 F150 5.0, sorry. I haven't figured out how to put it in my signature. No the pump was re-manufactured. I only assumed I knocked a vac line or something else off. That just seems the most probable cause. It could be anything. But to happen right after I replaced the pump almost has to be something like that. BTW, the 33 code is exactly that, EGR valve. I just haven't fixed it until the more pressing issues are complete, brakes, steering, oil leaks etc. I've only had the P/U a few weeks.
id just replace the vac line with rubber ones i did this not to long ago help my truck so much dropped almost 300 rpms at idle and i think i paid 15 bucks for them and i have plenty of extra tubing to go around if i need it. Its best to go to napa for the lines they sell it by the foot and its rubber hose autozone tried to charge me like 30 bucks for 5ft of all the sizes my truck needed cuz they were trying to sell me rubber fuel line haha
Okay now I'm really perplexed. When I put the old belt back on it threw it. Apparently, I didn't have it completely over a pulley. But I put it back on and it idled high. I just picked up a new belt and installed it. A new belt brought the idle back down! It was idling high right before I put on the belt. I didn't touch a thing. That is freaking weird. Btw I never did find any vac leaks or dislodged connectors. Odd really odd. I hate something happening I can't explain or see the reason!
Hey, if it fixed the problem just be done with it. My truck was cutting off and it had no codes and ran fine until it decided to start dying. I touched every wire in the engine bay trying to find problems.
It hasn't cut off in the last three days, I don't know what the hell I did, and as long as she run good, I don't care.
