educate a noob

if there is an oil leak on top of the engine (ie HPOP) then how does the oil get down to the bottom and leak by the vent/insp hole behind the oil pan. can some one explain it to me.

There is a drain in the back of the engine valley.

if i have oil in the valley and i have oil dripping out of that hole on the dust cover then it is possible for it to come down from the top?

Absolutely. Like Stewart said, there is a drain in the back of the valley where any accumulation of oil will pass through, and go down exiting the dust cover hole appearing as if you have a rear main seal leak.

VERY common... When I first got my truck, I panicked when I saw oil on the back of the block. Super easy fix of simply doing the CCV mod & tightening the clamps oall my boots.

i think i have a little more of an oil leak than that but it is on my list of mods. i am buying a beater gas car to go to and fro... then the truck is gonna get some much needed tlc one thing at a time. but first she has to get me and the misses to oregon...

Where you headed to Oregon? I assume you are moving here or just a visit?

If you have any issues along I-5 there is great FTE Brothers from the southern border to the Northern border.

yes we are moving. we are moving from boise, id to klamath falls, or. wont be sliding up I-5 but good to know you guys are in oregon. as soon as i get settled in and quit spending money on moving i will be getting a membership. i am thinking this is a good place to hang out. thanks.
