Unhappy ECT 187 EOT 208 @ 65mph :(

Well got my scangauge today and went for a drive. It was cool outside (75F) but EOT settled at 208 while ECT fluctuated between a low of 184 to 190 at 65mph unloaded.

Truck got HG, EGR cooler and oil cooler replaced at the dealer 2 months ago. Puked on me a little the last tow trip I took to the coast and went into limp mode due to some boost issues with the turbo (expect new powermax by the end of this month). A month ago when I installed a dieselsite coolant filter noticed Ford "Gold" coolant looked a little darker than I expected. Like pee when one is slightly dehydrated. Originally they had done a vc-9 flush to solve my over heating problem before I blew the head gaskets.

Think I have a case with the reading above to take it back to them and ask them to replace the oil cooler again?

For starters get a new thermostat, you should be more like 195-200 degrees. Then try it again.

Even if the coolant temp is slightly low, you shouldn't see that much difference between oil and coolant temps just running 65mph unloaded.

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
I had similar problems with me temps actually worse. My t-stat was stuck open and truck even loaded only got up to around 188*. Replaced t-stat and flushed with VC-9 and ECT went right to 196 and held there. That only made EOT get even worse. My difference was around 35*. Did a oil cooler and now unloaded or loaded temps never get more then about 8*and when I idle comming off the high way temps even out within 30sec.-1min

Thanks for all the responses. I was wondering if a new t-stat would make things worse. Right after they had done the work on the truck I took it on a tow and didn't get 30 miles away from home when the truck went into limp mode. It keeps going into limp mode going up grades and this last trip it puked. A month ago when installed my coolant filter, I used the drain plug and out came about 1/2 ounce of sand/debris. the first coolant filter change is due at the beginning of December. I've put about 200 miles of driving on it and will cut it open and post pictures depending on how it looks. I will talk with the service manager tomorrow and ask him what they are willing to do. Thanks again.

Cartmanea, hows your turbo holding up? Can't wait to get mine. IRC didn't you have a dead spot with your powermax? Who did you end up getting a tune from? I have stock sticks and I am a little concerned. Any experience you can share about your turbo would be greatly appreciated.

Turbo is doing great. I was running Innovative's tunes for the last two weeks trying them out and going back and forth to fix the dead spot. My issue was it didn't want to shift down after the RPMs got low and it would lug. Combine that with the higher power tune and it smoked quite a bit. The lower power tunes were great. Right now I'm stock again because my Xcal2 started freaking out.

I have the same problem with my stock turbo. It sticks sometimes when it shifts up and rpms are below 1800. The turbo wont build boost (5-6psi) and it lugs (egts start to skyrocket). I have to force it to shift down and then all of a sudden boost jumps up to 11-16 psi. When it lugs, whats the powermax boost at?

It'll build up to about 8-10 lbs rolling into it slowly until finally almost WOT it shifts down. With the ID Xtreme Street tune, when it finally shifts down it just about breaks the tires loose it takes off so hard. Anyway, since my Xcal2 crapped out I'll probably just leave it stock until I sell the truck, I like the more relaxed driving anyway and I won't fear popping the headgaskets. Between stock and the PowerMax, I really didn't notice much more lag because when the PowerMax lugs with stock programming you just push the throttle down and it downshifts, but with a tune it smokes a lot until it downshifts, so I almost like the stock programming better.

If you do replace the oil cooler again, you gotta go with the external oil cooler! I talked to a guy here locally that had his replaced with an OEM cooler and had it plug right back up 1 1/2 years later with 15K miles on it! Doing that job twice gets pricey! Temp splits don't even matter with the external cooler since it's an indicator of nothing except merely just the oil and or coolant temps! The difference doesn't matter because they are separate with the external setup! Don't get the Liberator, it destroys your A/C temps! I learned the hard way! Condensor Mounted Bulletproof Oil Cooler is the way to go!

Thanks scottman70. I always appreciate good advise. I just looked at the oil cooler setup and it definitely is the way to go. Its pretty expensive though.Thanks.

Yeah they aren't cheap but replacing an OEM oil cooler twice isn't cheap either! My external oil cooler will be on my truck as long as I own it, which is money well spent if your going to keep your 6.0 for a while! Mine initially had the Liberator and my AC temps wouldn't get below 60 degrees. Ended up using the Liberator relocate kit with the Bulletproof cooler....

A agree, blowing egr cooler and head gaskets because of a plugged cooler is way more expensive. Will have to see what santa brings this year.
