Question Engine additives

Just wondering if anyone has looked into the use of engine oil additives? My dad has used Zmax in all his vehicles for many years and swears by it. Just wondering if it might be beneficial to use the engine oil additive to help with longevity? Any thoughts?

After all the 6.0 diesel engine woes and the oil testing for the injection systems, I arrived at the conclusion that the oil manufacturers know their products best. Additives were strongly discouraged in the 6.0 and I see no change for the 6.7. I enjoy learning so if someone has a better plan, teach away. Great question

Regards

With the sole function of oil being to keep metal parts cool and away from each other, it would be good to know what additive can improve on today's good synthetic oils. Their operating temperatures range from -60F to +400F degrees. I can definitely understand the need for special additives and even cleaners in days past, but how do they apply today?

I personally love the lucas synthetic oil stabilizer , i've used it in my 06 6.0 since the first oil change when it was brand new , i use it in my 07 mercedes ml350 and will continue using it in my new 6.7 as soon as its time for the first oil change, i love this stuff . You will notice in any motor that when this is added it will run quieter and smoother.

What sold me on this product years ago, was when i was in the parts store at the counter they had this little demo of 4 metal gears stacked on top of each other with a crank to turn the bottom wheel , there were 2 of them next to each other one had just 10w30 in it and the other was the same with some of the product added to it. The one with just the oil when you turned the crank ,no matter how fast you turned it the oil never really made it to the top gear and kept it coated , the demo with the product added you barley had to crank the handle and the oil made it to the top gear faster and stayed there , and you could see the barrier the oil was making to protect the teeth on the gears.

those "stabilizers" directly affect viscosity and therefore the overall performance of the oil. In some cases it can be a good thing, in some cases a bad one. Keep in mind that your engine is not the same as the set of gears in the flashy display you saw. oil circulation in an engine works differently. Generally, it will cause oil pumps to work harder and for oil to drain more slowly from the engine while cooling down.

If 10w30 doesn't have the right viscosity, you should change oil weights... not add something that claims to be a "stabilizer". It's a gimmick, that's all.

If you are a firm believer in Lucas Oil Stabilizer, I suggest you google Bob is the Oil Guy and see what his experiments have shown. You can't turn the little crank on the store display fast enough to show how much that stuff foams up going through a high volume gear pump.

That stuff is a nightmare in HEUI injection systems that depend on clean, air free oil. If you want to use a gimmick that actually works, I would suggest just using Amsoil. I don't use it, but a friend does and has some quite interesting oil analysis sheets to prove how well it works. Any oil that maintains a TBN of 12+ after over 6,000 miles in a 7.3 is good in my book.

Has anybody found a good 10W30 diesel oil with a CJ-4 rating yet? Ford recommends 10W30 but I'm not seeing anything out there that meets the spec. I will probably use Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w40 from the second oil change on.

The general consensus on adding anything to 6.0 oil is negative except for the Hot Shot Secret debate. Now back to the 6.7 discussions...

I have been using royal purple synthetic in my 2002 F250 for the last 150,000 miles. I love it. It made my engine quiet, run cooler, and get better mpg. It isn't an additive but I am a believer.

I also switched to their transmision fluid and it runs great.

Hey I'm not on here to argue or mislead anyone , just giving my personal experiances with the stuff. To clarify the regular lucas which all the test i googled are done with is not the same as the synthetic version which i have always used, it even recommends to be added to 6.0 powerstrokes on the bottle of the synthetic. The synthetic version does not foam.

I wish to add this little bit of info ,when i had my head bolts and gaskets replaced at 80,000miles on my 6.0 i did get a little comment from the tech asking me what kind of oil i was using because there was basically no wear on any of the valvetrain. Plus i never had a injector go out on it either. I changed the oil in that truck every 15000 miles .
Just my 2 cents

I believe this product is good for engine start up protection the most important. , so yes i will still use it in my new 6.7 motor ,because it has never given me a reason not to. Again your just adding 1 quart to 12 quarts of the oil of your choice its not going to hurt anything, i can see a problem if people are adding more than their supposed to or the original version of the product. The info is in the following link.

Lucas Pure Synthetic Oil Stabilizer - Lucas synthetic engine oil additive
