I have changed my fuel filters 3X in the last 5000 miles (since last November). The first time was just a routine change (changed my batteries at the same time). A month ago my father-in-law was driving the truck and it just stopped. It would idle but would not take acceleration and then would die after a few minutes. It would restart but same thing...no acceleration and then died. He had a "mechanic" come out and the guy changed the fuel filters and it ran great. A few days ago my wife stopped to fill up and when she tried to leave the station the same thing happened to her. The truck did take acceleration after sitting, without running, for a few minutes but then the truck stopped taking acceleration while she was driving. Since she was only a few miles from the ranch I towed the truck there and changed fuel filters again. The truck ran fine after the filter change. I drove it 70 miles back home and it ran great the whole time.
The truck runs great except for this one issue. Plenty of power, no smoke except for the puff of black smoke when you really get in the accelerator.
The only mod I have is 4", straight pipe, turbo back exhaust.
Thanks BISMIC. All the research I have done on the problem points to the need for the gauge and I will try to put one on ASAP. I researched through the tech folder and the problem seems to be pointing towards an issue with my HFCM.
Has anyone had this problem? There is never a CEL when this occurs.
My truck is a 2004 F350 SRW CC 4X4. No mods other than the exhaust. Not sure if this will make any difference on the advice I get but I cleaned the EGR valve a few months ago and it was dirty but not bad and it was dry.
