I recently bought a 07 XLT SC LB with a 5.4L. It has 3.55 gears and 46K miles on it. Ironically it gets the same mpg as my old 1990 XLT Larait: about 10 mpg. Most of my trips are at least 20 miles to get to town, running around, then 20 miles back.
What do I check first?
Well you really aren't going to improve it that much because you have the 5.4 but the 3.55 gears. But you could look into replacing your fuel filter. Most likely this hasn't been done yet. Run the fuel cleaner through the system with your next oil change this will help to clean out the engine some. What kind of tires do you have on the truck currently? Changing them to a better tire will improve the ride of teh truck and should help with MPG's as well.
Sorry we don't have better news but these trucks aren't great on the gas.
Well with those tires you would think it would do better. I would change the fuel filter and do the seafoam down the intake. The filter is supposed to be replaced about every 30k I think. Maybe a TB and fuel line clean out service will help to.
Yes 10 mpg is on the low side. But not unexpected with short runs.
What are your driving habits?
How are you measuring the consumption?
Are you using ethanol blended gas? That has a really detrimental effect on mpg.
I fill up the tank, reset the trip odometer, run the tank almost to zero gallons, refuel. I note how many gallons I put in, see how many miles I went and do the math by hand.
The truck doesn't an onboard mpg gauge or whatever.
Like others said, get that fuel filter changed. Also, check the air filter, tire pressure, oil level (keep it changed at the proper interval) and make sure sure you're not toting around extra weight (get that bag of quick-crete out of the bed).
You might also get the brakes looked at. Every so often a caliper or e-brake gets stuck.
