I have a 1991 f150 XLT Lariat 5.0 and the manual states that I should be getting 15 miles in the city and 20 miles on the hwy. I have been checking the MPG (front tank holds 19 gallons and rear 18.2). I am only getting 12 miles city and 15 miles Hwy. What do I need to do to increase the MPG? I bought the truck used 4 years ago and have not done anything to boost the milage on a gallon of gas. Suggestions please. Thanks.

And you will not as no manual as such was published. There are articles provided by the EPA giving estimate MPGs but if you are getting 12 city/15hwy, based on the some seven or eight '92 - '96 F150's I have owned, I think you are about maxed out save some minor tweaking to your truck.
You just can't have the best of both worlds when you are pushing a 4700lb brick down the road.

Thats what I was thinking. The ONLY place i ever saw MPG was on a window sticker and that was a GUESSIMATE at best
The OEM window sticker are EPA calculated estimates of the MPG for that vehicle. If you have a consumer reports membership there is a tab that will tell you the EPA MPG estimate and the CR 150 mile road trip average... The actual mpg is amost always less than what the sticker reads. Anyway not to discourage you (carino), but 12/15 mpg is decent for a truck of that age. With all that being said I would still suggest the sixlitre tune-up the next time you need to do repace your plugs, wires, cap/rotor... You'd already be 50% there and just need a new coil and adjust your timing... E-fans are a minimal help but if it's a DD you'll save some penny's in the long run (junk yard fans usually only run $20). Other than that you just have to keep your engine in tip top condition... put some injector cleaner through it (i like lucas brand), change your air filter, change your oil regularly... Small things like that always add up.

The "manual" I referred to was in the glove box when I bought the truck. It also stated the weight was 3949 and the wheelbase was 133 inches. Perhaps the person typed the information. What is a "sixlitre tune-up as appose to a full tune-up? Thank you all for all the information. I am beginning to know a bit more about trucks.
You know what? I love my truck because so far it has helped move three of my friends pulling those large U haul trailers for over 100 miles and my Rosie has never hesitated. Thank you for the feedback and I thought 15 MPG was too low. I will again do another test to see if this number changes.
In these old trucks speed kills milage, I have a 1988 F-150, with a 1995 5.0, if I keep it on cruise @60mph it will get 17 to 18 mpg, but you drive 70 and man it drops to about 15 mpg like you get. I'l also say keeping the injectors clean helps a lot.

What product do you use to keep the injectors clean? Thanks
