The casting number was c8ae-h, I looked at the manifold bolts and it used bolts at 3 and 9 but had the holes at 12 and 6 also. So can I just use the generic headers then? Also does anyone know of a pretty radical cam I can use with the stock valvetrain? I can do springs if needed.

From what I'm reading, the C8AE-H heads are nothing special, they were used on the 390GT engine, 428PI, and the hydraulic cammed '68 427 4 bbl.
According to what I've read, The standard D2TE-A heads used on our trucks is the same basic head casting but with hardened ex. valve seats for unleaded fuel.
Google C8AE-H and you will get a lot of info on these heads.

Yes, these heads were used before unleaded fuel. If you're planning on driving it a lot you might consider having hardened exhaust seats put in or switch to an unmolested set of the D2 heads. The reason I say unmolested is these seats are induction hardened. The hardness is only a few thousandths of an inch thick. After one ore two valve jobs the hardness is gone and you have to install the hard seats anyway.

There were several versions of the common C8AE-H heads, they were used on everything from 390 2 barrels to regular (non Cobra Jet) 428`s. They all had the small valves (2.03" Intake, 1.56" exh), but the big car & truck heads used the 2 bolt per port "up & down" bolt pattern, and the Fairlane, Torino, Mustang etc versions used the 14 bolt (up & down, as well as staggered horiziontal , total of 4 bolt holes) on the end of each head, while the center 2 ports used the horoziontal holes, plus the upper hole. the hole under the port was missing for the center 2 ports. Compared to the big car/truck heads, the upper bolt holes on the end cylinders are located about 3/8-1/2" lower on the Fairlane type heads. So, this means, unless you want to start drilling and tapping your heads, with most headers (2 bolt per port), you would only be able to install 4 header bolts per head (the 2 uppers in the center 2 ports, and the 2 lowers on the end ports. ) a guaranteed leak. Now, supposedly, some replacment C8AE-H heads were sold with the 4 bolt per port "Cobra Jet" style exh. pattern, but I`ve never seen any. Another consideration is the actual location of the exh port itself. All the older 1958-64 or 65 heads had the higher exhaust port floor, MOST regular 66 & later heads have the port located about 1/2" lower, so not all header flanges fit the port location correctly, even if the correct exh. bolt pattern is there. Plenty of stuff to check out!

Wow, that's going to be a pain to try and get a set of headers that fit. The drilling and tapping isn't an issue, but finding a set that will fit might be.

Physically the 427 heads will bolt onto a 390 block. However the exhaust valves are too big to fit inside the bore. The bores will only accomidate 1.66" exhaust valve no bigger. The intake valves will fit just fine though, upto 2.20"
