Question Thoughts On Tailgate Lock

I was just wondering what everyone that has a lock on their tailgate uses. I have seen these three different ones on the web. Two are made by Pop N Lock and one is made by Bully.

I have this one currently. It works fine, but I don't like how it rides on the paint. I also don't like that I have to leave it off if I don't want the gate locked. Another thing is that its kinda ugly when its on the truck.

PL2000STE : Pop-N-Lock Tailgate Handle Lock at StylinTrucks.com

I have been considering this one. It looks like you lock and unlock it more like a factory tail gate lock.

PL2300 : Pop-N-Lock Tailgate Handle Lock at StylinTrucks.com

Then there is this one.

LH004 : Tailgate Handle Lock at StylinTrucks.com

Does anyone have any of these, or have thought on which one is the best one? Also, if you know of another one, please post a picture or link.

My tailgate lock is a stainless steel hose clamp around the right side hinge (the one with the slot in it). I turned the screw part down and tightened it with an open-end wrench. I have used this security system since 1989 and have never lost a tailgate.

I actually have the exact same thing. I have had it that way for 10 years. That is great advice though. Everyone should do that.

I was thinking more to keep big items from being stolen out of the bed. I also thought it would be nice to lock it so that poeple don't open it to sit on. My friend always has these butt heads at work that use his truck to sit on a work. I actually came out of the movies one time and some kids were using mine as a bench. I wasn't too happy about that.

I don't have one and have never felt the need for one. What purpose does it do other than secure your tailgate? Tailgate theft isn't a problem here. I don't see how it would help secure anything in the bed either. A topper can be broken into real easy and tonneau covers are a waste of time also as far as security goes. So, tell me, what other purpose can a tailgate lock serve.

I'll tell you what purpose a tailgate lock can serve, wycowboy63.

It takes a person with no tools about TWO (2) SECONDS to completely remove your entire tailgate from the truck itself.

A new tailgate costs around $500.00.

A new tailgate finish panel costs around $400.00.

A tailgate lock can save a truck owner around $1000.00 for a replacement.

Is that a good enough reason to get a tailgate lock?

The hose clamp trick works the best.

As for securing the tailgate like a trunk-if you have a solid fiberglass tonneuo cover maybe whatevers in the bed is ok, if you got a cap-literally 2 secs with a hammer and it could be gone.

Ive also been looking into handle locks. The checkmate tonneau cover doesn't go over the tailgate so I will need to lock the tailgate up.

Ive only seen 1 picture of one installed.

Thanks, I appreciate the schooling on this.

I live in a small town in Wyoming. Small town by your (probably) standards anyway. For Wyoming, its a mid size town. About 10K people called Sheridan. Tailgate theft is not a problem here. If, and thats a big if, someone was to steal my tailgate I would just go to one of my rancher friends with a Ford truck graveyard or a junkyard and get another one, for about $50. My truck is a 1990 model XLT Lariet, blue on white with the usual rust. The blue paint is peeling off in chunks. It isn't a good looking truck so if the replacement tailgate doesn't match thats ok. If the sole purpose of having this lock is to prevent that theft, I would have to pass. For me, its a waste of money. For you, it may be cheap insurance.

If there is something large like a riding lawn mower or a four wheeler in the bed, it would be pretty hard to lift it out of the bed. I do know of a few times over the years where people have had their tailgate stolen too.

I know that toppers can be broken into, but if someone has a hard tonnue cover, it could keep things fairly secure in the bed as well.

Thats the one I was thinking of. It stays in place all the time right and you lock and unlock that gate?

Thats exactly my thoughts. I got a new finish panel a few years ago and it was around 300 bucks. They have gone up since then. Also, I don't want to have to get a new gate paint matched and have to worry about pin stripes that are discontinued either.

I guess it all depends on your experience and where you live. I have driven around all summer plus parked on the street on one of the busiest streets in town with my Craftsman push lawn mower, a set of metal car ramps, a set of 6 ton jack stands plus several drain pans in the back of my truck. They are all still there. Theft just isn't a problem here. It happens but its so rare that it usually causes comments when it happens.
