How much power is expected out of a moderate built 360/390 compared to a moderate built 429/460? Am I ok to question on this? I just wanna get rid of this 400 and get something with some POWER.
I rebuilt a 36o, installed it in my 4 speed truck, ran it for a year, was disappointed in its performance, Found a 460, installed it, what a difference! its like night and day, go 460 and never look back!
I have a 460 truck. It has been sitting around for a while, but in good condition. I was going to use it to do house work. The issue with 460 of course is gas. Will this be your daily driver or play truck?
IMO, the 385-series has better aftermarket support and are more plentiful in the yards. The FE ended in 1976 and their relative rareness is starting to become apparent. Dollar for dollar, the 429/460 provide better value.
HP? A decent 390 is worth 300-325 hp... a decent 460 will net upwards of 400. Aluminum heads, a single plane manifold, the right cam, and an 850 cfm carb on a 460 will generate around 500 hp.
On the street, torque is king. What are you after? Torque down low or HP at 5500 rpm?
Yeah its just a play truck. I rebuilt my 400 with a nice came and EB intake and carb. I just want more. Thanks for the input guys. I guess I will start looking for a 460. Does anyone know if the spline and shaft are the same for the trans where a 460 will slip on where the 400 once was. Also another stumper. ??460 or 429??
