Help! which 460 distributor
I looked and asked around. I was told by people who had a lot of experience working on and racing 460's that I could spend my money in lots better ways than to replace the OEM with aftermarket.
I've learned since then that rebuilts are infamous for having springs and weights mismatched to the use of the engine. Ford put 460's into lots of vehicles, from TBirds to Motorhome chassis, and the rebuilt you buy at NAPA could have parts from any or all of them. Even a new one may not be perfectly matched to your particular use.
I had my rebuilt set up and recurved by an ignition shop. My distributor is now perfectly matched to my driveline, my driving style and pulling my RV ... Clyde's primary use and purpose.
It was also cheaper
I use an OEM distribuitor (in good shape - not loose or sloppy) & re-curve advance to match my cam. I use Blue stripe FoMoCo Module w/ "crisp" fresh coils.
I've been known to "dance" down local 1/4 mile a time or 2 w/ a 460 powered 66 F-100. I'm in mid 12 sec et with OEM set up.
I do swap cap & rotor to an older non breakerless set up & set of magetic supression plug wires when I race it.
I also have a heavy F250 Supercab Short bed trailer special w/460. I run OEM set up in it. Again, a Bule Stripe module on it. It also has been set up to match curve of RV Cam engine runs. I pull 18' tag trailer. I've grossed over 17K lbs often pulling a farm tractor weighing 10,500lbs.
I have had zero problems with either distribuitor. F250 has well over 180, 000 miles & 10 years on it. 66 F100 is a few years old & not much milage. Both work fine & can be repaired on the road with OEM parts if they ever do, fail or give me problems. FBp
