Ok, always wondered about this one:
How many of us guy Excursion owners out there bought the big X for personal enjoyment, and not because of wife, kids, etc. But just for the towing, looks, feel, etc.
I saw it, i wanted it, I made it mine.
Saw it on dealer's lot. Liked it. Bought it. Used for personal transportation only, 99% of it's use in city traffic. Wife never sees anything I buy until I get home with it, which actually includes the new silver Impala I bought her a few months ago.
Definitely because I wanted it and not becasue of the "family". Wife and I are "empty-nesters" and are looking towards retirement. Needed something bigger than the Expedition (and a diesel) for towing and hauling all the toys I use (bikes, fishing gear, kayaks, canoe, inflatable, dogs, etc., etc.).
This TV should last for another 200,000 miles +!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, everbody in Texas drives trucks................ the bigger the better.
Well, so far there are couple of you guys out there like me. How many others, let's see BTW I have 3 Excursions, and looking for 4th and 5th. as well as 3 other SUVs
Interesting side note: when I got my drivers license some 30 odd years ago, I was driving things that got 10-15 mpg (highway/city combined). Fast forward to present: vehicles are newer, and still getting 10-15 mpg. I would not know what to do with a high MPG vehicle

Reason: additional info
I have always been one that is sort of in the minority...
I bought my Ex PURELY for the towing factor and because it has 3 rows of seating to 'separate' my two girls on our LONG 12-14 hour towing days.
IF I didn't have a 9000# 35' hitch to bumper trailer that I haul all over the USA...I would NOT have an Ex...
To me in my personal situation...I would prefer something more fuel efficient even though I only drive 4 miles one way to work...and that is why my Ex is primarily used as a Snow and Tow vehicle...she sits much of the time until we are pulling the trailer or it is winter here in Indiana...my 'commute' if you will is what I call an extreme city commute meaning there are no less than 8-10 traffic lights between my home and work and I can usually count on hitting about 75% of them red...which means accelerating from a dead stop many times on the way to work which contributes to ~8 mpgs on these extreme commutes to work...but accelerating ~7400#'s that many times even slowly...demands fuel be burned...whether it is gasoline or diesel...my commute would put a hurt on anyone's mpgs...so to me...having this Ex is because it is the RIGHT tool for my trailer and family while towing...plain and simple.
It is a VERY comfortable vehicle to travel long distances on though...no questions there.
My $0.02 on this topic...take it for what you paid!
I also bought it because it was big and offered a diesel option. Living in NC we like to drive on the beach a lot. I can put 10 of my friends in it and all of our gear and have a great time. The wife and I are very out going, snow boarding, beach, camping... we needed a rig to haul us and friends along.
And I like the 7.3 diesel because...well...its a diesel, dont know how else to put it.
It’s the only SUV with a factory diesel other than the $50,000 DuraBurb. Seen it wanted it can afford it now so I got it. It’s a daily driver and I like only having to fill up every month and a half. Plus all those Rice Burners tend to get out of the way for ya.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I've always owned a pickup or a car that would barely fit 4 adults and it just got old taking 3 vehicles on business meetings, family outings or vacations, so I decided to find the biggest thing out there to haul everyone around together. Also wanted to change to a diesel because I've never had one. My first choice was the Hummer, but the dealership thought I was pulling their leg driving a beat up pickup that NASCAR stickers stuck everywhere (Drove it to a race and someone put acouple stickers on it and I guess everyone else joined in on the fun). Salesman came back and told me that he didn't have a single key to a Hummer for me to test drive one and now I'm so glad that it worked out this way.
We wanted a tow vehicle that can seat more than 5 comfortably. We wanted a travel trailer with the amenities we wanted. Our Toyota Sienna was not capable. So I thought of the biggest SUV out there. There was the Excursion and Suburban. My friends have always told me Ford makes the best trucks, so I went ahead with looking for the Excursion. Not knowing what its towing capabilities were at the time, just dove right in. Later, found out it exceeded my expectations as a tow vehicle after I bought it.
I've have been driving large SUVs for years now and finally traded down to a Saturn Outlook thinking I would be getting so much better mileage than my Navigator. Biggest piece of crap I ever owned. I've always wanted an Ex and when my son was born we tried going grocery shopping with all the kids...We couldn't fit groceries AND a stroller! This became the excuse to finally get my dream truck and now I have an awesome vehicle.
BTW, I think the Diesel Excursion is an economy vehicle. Really, what other 4-ton vehicle, fully loaded gets 20 MPG on the highway? I'd like to see a Toyota or Honda carry as much weight and get the same!
