I just bought mine a month ago. 2004 Limited with V-10 4X4. Was tired of an underpowered tow vehicle for the numerous snowmobiling and 4 wheeling trips to the mountains. The lockable storage and ability to carry more than 4 people was a huge factor as well. Love the size as well, when I jump in my wifes new Tahoe I feel like I'm driving a sports car, compared to driving the Ex. Really happy so far. Thanks to all you guys for all the valuable information I have gotten of this site.
Back in the late 80's I saw a Centurion lifted up on 36's and always wanted one but they were rare and expensive for the time. When the Excursions first came out in 2000 and it looked like a modern Centurion I knew I'd own one, just had to wait till I could comfortably afford one.
I wanted a tow vehicle that would be able to pull any newer, bigger, or faster toys that came around. It is my daily driver with 90% around town driving, which was my main factor in choosing the V10 over a diesel. I have three girls, a grandson, and the Mrs, so it was the perfect size.
I've wanted one for a long time... just couldn't afford it. Finally got one a few months back (2004 EB 4x4 with V10). I absolutely love it. It is my daily driver and I love it. Great power, great looks and very comfortable.
Im always wanted one. Mine was traded at the dealer I work at. Before the owners had a new car picked out, I told the appraiser what I woudl pay for it. 2 hours later, it was mine. Had to have it. It was intended to be for my wife. I now drive it everyday to work. LOVE IT!!!!
Have wanted one since back when they were new, just a little too pricey for my budget. Finally found the right one after a long and exhaustive search. We wanted it as a people mover for dinner outings, day trips and such. We also needed a heavier tow platform than my old half ton Chevy to pull our then current trailers (7k 24' enclosed car hauler and 23' SeaRay boat). Of coarse once it joined the fleet that made it possible to buy our new 28' toyhauler camper (12k). So basically bought it for towing and as a bus, with very little commuting or daily use.
Well the wife and kids did have some impact on the decision. The 2 great Danes helped too. I really wanted to be able to haul 2 family's of 4 with stuff. Being able to haul full sheets of plywood is just a bonus.
I bought mine as a tow vehicle and something to take on vacations that was family friendly and would still pull anything that needs pulling. It is replacing a 92 F350 Diesel. The Excursion is a V10. Both got about 12 MPG so it was an easy decision. I don't need something with a bed because I have trailers for hauling stuff. Gas is cheaper than diesel and it is alot easier to find. The only place that did not gouge you for diesel was Walmart. I also don't have to deal with all the diesel related BS. Fuel filters, 10 quarts of oil, coolant additive, fuel additive etc. etc., not to mention stinky fuel and stinky exhaust. I just sold the F-350 and now if I can just sell my popup slide in I will be just about even with what I paid for the Excursion.
Now If I can just figure out what to do with that third row seat that I never use. I don't want to get rid of it and I don't want it to get messed up.
Yeah I remember talking to a couple pulling a little tear drop camper behind a honda minivan. It usually got 20 something and it would turn off cylinders going down the road with no load on it but pulling the little tear drop it got about 12 MPG. So bottom line is you might as well have an X getting 12 MPG than a Honda Mini Van.
With the Diesel the fuel economy is amazing. When you consider
you need at least 2 Prius Hybrids to haul all the stuff that fits in an
Ex the mileage is pretty close. Plus, that diesel sound
I have an in-law in an electric wheelchair, we spend summers in
Colorado. We rented a 4wd Ex in AZ and drove it for 2 weeks and loved it. The rental folks claimed the Secret Service used them for the VP
- they had several on the lot: black, dark tint, limited, and 4x4
It was the gas v8 or v10 - it got 11MPG on the highway (60-70 MPH)
and it had "just" enough room for all our luggage, ramps, chair, and 4 adults.
I traded in my '97 Tahoe (195K, 16 MPG) 3 days ago for my '05 PSD Ex.
The wife was amazed driving 65 on the highway we reset the trip computer .....
We averaged 23.5 MPG for 15 miles on the highway,
and after 2 days of commuting I'm getting 18.2 MPG of mostly city driving.
Traded in the Tahoe. Needed more room for the wifey, two kids, golden retriever, and whatever is being towed. Like we say, we like'em big here in Texas...
It was a practical buy for me. Needed something to pull the rv and 3 kids and a retriever. Crew cab was too crowded, Bowties ain't my thing, Dodge is not an option, Ford X fits my Family
