460 questions
hello all, i dont know much about the 460 but there is a guy on craigslist wanting to trade a 460 out of a lincoln for a 351m. i have a 351m in my truck and would like to get rid of it. so my question is, is a 460 a 460, or are there differences in the ones used in cars? im guessing the accessories wont be plug and play will they?

Front sump oil pan, you will need a rear sump pan or it could be hit by the front pumpkin and different exhaust manifolds. If you do not get the correct ones, especially on the passenger side you will either have to notch the frame a bit or go to headers.
Or get 460 truck exhaust manifolds, all this is to my best memory off FTE site.

I'm in the midst of this same swap now with my '79 so I've done a lot of reading over the past 6 months or so. The following pertains to my '79 swap, I don't know what year you're working on but that may affect this info too.
Blocks on the 460 changed with a '79 casting to an externally balanced engine vs the early internally balanced engine. Either is perfectly usable, most people seem to prefer the early style internally balanced versions. Also check casting numbers on the heads. Some good ones include C8VE, C9VE, D0VE and D3VE (the latter is the later style head with bigger chamber but still good street potential).
As for swap parts, you will want the rear sump pan as mentioned above and you can use truck manifolds including some mid-80s manifolds. Alternatively you can buy a set of L&L headers (there are a few other brands too) but they'll run around $450-500. Do not notch the frame to fit a car manifold on there.
Motor mounts are available for just over $100 from L&L that will allow things to fit without having to move the transmission anywhere. You'll want power steering and alternator brackets which can also be purchased new from L&L for around $100 each, or you can search for van brackets which as I understand, fit right in.
There are lots of site detailing the swap out there. Here's one:

If your 76 F250 does have a 351M in it (351/400's did not come in those trucks) then it will be just as much trouble if not more to put the 390 in it.
If your 76 is auto the 460 will bolt up to your trans. The 390 will require a different trans.
Both swaps will require things. The 460 swap is much more common.

well i was real hesitant because of the extra cost to get all brackets, and engine mounts, but the local junk yard i go to has 3 trucks with 460's in them. so ill steal brackets and motor mounts off of them. i keep forgetting to look and see if any of them have headers or not. i do know, two of them have edelbrock performer intakes on them and i can get one for 25.00. i think im gonna look at possible doing the trade. only thing that concerns me is that i cant hear/ see it run. i should be able to keep my power steeromg pump and alt right?

Try to get all of your brackets and pulleys off the same truck. It may be silly, but there were minor variances in them, and it can become a real pita to get everything set up right. I ended up going with a set of March pulleys, just because i was having such a hard time getting all of the pulleys to match up.

I put a 460 in a 79 bronco and I never had to move the trans. just make some motor mount adapters. I would think a f250 would be the same as to the trans. location ? Get all of the brackets that you can. I was lucky , I had another truck I salvaged from the heavy duty radiator on back complete.
