Blocks on the 460 changed with a '79 casting to an externally balanced engine vs the early internally balanced engine. Either is perfectly usable, most people seem to prefer the early style internally balanced versions. Also check casting numbers on the heads. Some good ones include C8VE, C9VE, D0VE and D3VE (the latter is the later style head with bigger chamber but still good street potential).

As for swap parts, you will want the rear sump pan as mentioned above and you can use truck manifolds including some mid-80s manifolds. Alternatively you can buy a set of L&L headers (there are a few other brands too) but they'll run around $450-500. Do not notch the frame to fit a car manifold on there.

Motor mounts are available for just over $100 from L&L that will allow things to fit without having to move the transmission anywhere. You'll want power steering and alternator brackets which can also be purchased new from L&L for around $100 each, or you can search for van brackets which as I understand, fit right in.

There are lots of site detailing the swap out there. Here's one:

Thanks for the info. I was just going to post these same questions. I always wanted to know about the different head castings.

I to will be doing the 460 swap soon but in a 78 Bronco. My 460 came out of a 1974 Lincoln.
I'm using factory 460 manifolds out of a 1979 F150 2wd as well as alternator bracket, a/c bracket, power steering bracket.
I decided to keep the stock cast iron 4 barrel manifold and have a Edelbrock 600 electric choke carb on it.
Runs fine on the engine stand we will see how it does in vehicle. I have a 750 carb as well but I don't think it will need it. A simple metering rod and jet change on the 600 will get me where I need to be I believe if its even needed.
I got my engine mounts from LEB(Left Eye Blind Racing).
I ordered the Ford Racing rear sump oil pan kit and a stock volume/pressure Melling oil pump.

If your 76 is auto the 460 will bolt up to your trans. The 390 will require a different trans.
Only V8 available in 1968/76 F100/250 4WD: 360 2V, but it's almost the same as the 390. The block/heads and the bore are the same (4.05"), the only difference is the stroke. 360 = 3.50" - 390 = 3.78."

To convert a 360 to a 390 requires the 390 crank, rods and pistons....that's it!

The C6 used with FE engines will not work with any other engine size.

NOTE: There were TWO different 460's used in 1979: Block casting numbers D1VE-6015-AB & D9TE-6015-AB

D1VE is internally balanced, D9TE is externally balanced. The flywheel (flexplate) and harmonic balancer are specific to either.

There were no before/from production dates or serial numbers, the block casting number must be known to get the correct parts.

Both swaps will require things. The 460 swap is much more common.
What he said. First thing to do is make sure what engine you actually do have.
