My 5 speed won't shift anymore when the engine is running, clutch is not disengaging enough. I bought the heim joint (permanent fix) a month or so ago but couldn't work on it because I was recovering from a surgery. Now when I look at the linkage it looks like there is quite a bit of movement or slop in the bushings at the pedal box shaft. I think I'll need to replace bushings there too. God what an ugly evil place to work!! Don't know if I can but I'll have to give it a try. Any help or suggestion on doing this would be greatly appreciated, and I suppose the bushings I'll need will have to come from the dealer/steeler.
the little lever on the end of the shaft will come off (it is very tight on the shaft) take the nut off, get a large screwdriver with a square shank on it, put a crescent wrench on the screwdriver after you get it up in there between the lever and the aluminum bracket, put a twist on it and it should move the lever, the shaft has splines on it, the lever is mashed onto the splines with the nut from the factory, move the lever one spline toward the firewall. then you elongate the hole on the master cylinder so it will go onto the lever from the clutch pedal, put a washer or two if necessary between the master cylinder and the firewall to move the master foreward just enough because you dont want the clutch to be riding the throwout bearing all the time. your clutch will fell like a brand new one, no money spent, put a little hose clamp on the end of the little titty coming off the little lever if it keeps popping off when you push the clutch. enjoy!! the bushings from the dealer probably wont help much because im sure its already beyond repairing, i actually found a good one in the junkyard once upon a time, but that was pure luck im guessing.
WOW!! that's a really nice picture and a very ugly fracture of the mechanism.
89ford73, thanks for the suggestion on repair I'll give it a try tomorrow, I think I understand most of what your saying and hopefully will be a little clearer when I get into it.
Just want to thank you all for suggestions and help, I did the heim joint (permanent fix) and tried to move the arm a little when replacing it onto the shaft spline. It shifts much better now. I still would like it to be better, so may have to replace the pedal box, good for now though.
