i have a 1991 ford F 450 460 gas 2 wheel drive with a 5 speed (4 speed with 5th overdrive). the problem i have, i cant get shift into rev or 2 gear when the truck is at a dead stop. if the truck is coasting slowly i can shift. it acts like the clutch isn't releasing or not stoping. the clutch is in good working order not slipping, it will chatter some but not all the time. i tow a big traler and construction equipment all the time. any one have an idea, or this same problem??? i was thinking that the pilot bearing could be bad, frozen and won't let the input shaft stop turning??? i dont know if this truck has a bearing or a brass bushing??? any help would be or ideas???
The pilot bearing is just a support for the end of the input shaft. It sounds like you might have a little wear or alignment problem with those particular syncro gears. As big as that truck is, it should be a ZF tranny, correct? When you come to a stop, put in neutral and let out the clutch. Push back in and try shifting, see if that helps. Also, I read alot about changing the type of fluid you run it helps alot.
if i let the transmission in nutural and come to a complete stop i can't get the shifter to go into 2nd or 1st(crepper gear). if i shift before stoping dead i can drop right into gear. the reason i was thinking about the pilot bearing is if it was frozen/tight when the clutch is depressed the disc(clutch) should stop turning. with the disc splined to the input shaft if the pilot bearing was not working or frozen the shaft can,t stop? if the disc doesn't stop turning the gears are still turning???
If the pilot bearing is frozen, it would probably chew up the end of the input shaft or seize to it and spin in the engine bore side. If it is preventing the input shaft from turning freely with the clutch depressed, you would have a meshing problem.
i may have a similiar problem developing, same tranny in a 1990 f-250 with the 351w. rolling a little it falls right in to 2nd but at a dead stop it takes some muscle to clunk it into gear. ive read on this forum using something besides ATF in the manual tranny is a good idea. someone please elaborate!
i never drained the trans oil but i did add 85/140 gear oil to top off. never knew it needed ATF oil. was thinking about adding lucas trans oil to gearbox.
i have looked at a lot of the threads and can't find any thing out, eather on the changing the oil, or simular problems with this transmossion. i am sure more than two of us are having this problem. we need help!!
