Hey, I am currently looking at a beautiful 1968 F100 2wd with 3spd on the column, Since im not the best at driving a manual I was wondering if this truck could be convert into an automatic, and if so would it be hard to do or cost very much?
you will need a c6 trany. new drive line and may need a new cross member for that trany ( but not sure on that). then do a floor shifter. then do what you want with the shifter on the column (we just pulled the the lever off and left the rest). the peddle you can just push down to the floor and the spring will keep it down on the floor. my buddy did this to his 78 f100 and it was not to bad if you have the time.
thanks, dossent sound to bad i suppose however im not very good mechanicly, i helped put a tranny in my old '83 f150 that was an auto, but i only helped, and where i am living we are not permitted to work on our vehicle in the parking lot (ugh)
Isnt that hard to learn to shift., and you would save a few hundred dollars for something cool to put on your rig
Yeah that is true, I already know the gear placement on the column, but im also in a very heavy traffic area and dont know how well i would be able to do in this traffic or on the interstate with it
Mudd, Many of us upgrade our trucks to auto trannys along with power steering and power disc brakes. All of this can be gotten from a single donor truck.
You may have to find a place that you can use for several months while you do your upgrades.
I believe everyone should learn to drive manual shift vehicles. Those folk can drive autos but not the other way around.
the cross members are the same but the trans. mounts are different you would also need to find a drive shaft and for the c6 the slip yoke which is usually the bigger universal joint on the front and the rear end is the small joint at least mine was like this.So there is some playing around looking for a drive shaft or a 2 sized universal joint.I put a newer column in mine from an auto truck up to 77 has the neutral safety switch is a plug in.Just have to change the plug for the turn signal switch.what engine do you have? Where you at in Ohio?

Thank you for the info john, and your right about the driving them part, I plan to learn how to drive it for awhile before I attempt to change it over to an auto, mostly because of travailing and traffic in my area.
