The DEF tank uses a real simple electrode type level sensor that only measures 3 positions, so there is no real way to provide a accurate DEF level like you see with fuel level which uses a float system. The electrodes on the sensor are arranged vertically to provide a high, middle, and low level signal and a fourth electrode runs the length of the sensor to act as the ground. When the tank is full, the DEF (which is a good conductor of electricity) closes a circuit between all three level electrodes and the ground electrode, indicating the tank is full. As the DEF is consumed, the level drops and uncovers each electrode in sequence. The PCM calculates the DEF level based on these signals.

Thanks. Come to think of it, a float system wouldn't work too well inside a block of ice. See, Ford was thinking when they implemented that.

Epic great job buddy........the 2 1/2 gal jugs I bought brought a nifty hose attached to the mouth of the jug........no funnel required.......but hey look at it this way, you wouldn't of tasted the urea.

Ya, I wish it had a more accurate guage to tell how much was in there. I just top it off whenevery I feel like it. last time it took 1 gallon after 2200 kms (1500 miles)

I have yet to let it go to "less than half" reading.

I just purchased the 2.5 Gal Peak bottle for $11 with spout. Hopefully the spout is a little more convenient than the funnel. Certainly would be nice to have a gauge or graphic indicator for long trips.
