A quick tip to go along with Epic's video... With colder temps right around the corner it is especially important not to over fill the DEF tank. DEF expands as it freezes and has been known to crack the tank.
Good video.
4 gal; I guess that was "under half full" as the truck computer explained.
I suppose it could be a little more intelligent.
I think it is pretty intelligent. If you keep driving it will count you down just like the Miles to E. I drove mine down to 340 or something like that and then filled with almost 5 gallons. 1/2 tank should be 2.5 gallons. I doubt we'll ever get it drained to where 5.5 or 6 gallons would be required. The engine will go into a reduced power state and eventually limp mode. It's in the manual.
While I agree that the countdown is intelligent, I have seen a post that says the dealers can actually see percentage left in the tank. If they can in fact see this, why not put it on the display?
I don't have the 6.7L yet..not till next July/Aug. With the DEF fill..how often do you have to fill based on used tanks of fuel? I know there is a computer that tells you your percentage. But I'm wondering how often/much it would be filled based on a fuel useage?

This was my first refill in 5,500 miles. That works out to be just a little over a third of a cent per mile. It depends upon how hard you work your truck. Towing, for example creates high exhaust gas temps which is when the NOx is formed. The DEF is injected to break the NOx down into its inert components (Nitrogen and Oxygen). If you're towing a lot, you will refill more often. If you run around town on short trips, you'll hardly use any at all. I've heard refill ranges anywhere from 3,500 miles to 10,000 miles.
Diesel engine manufacturers using DEF to meet 2010 emissions talk about a 2% rate of usage, so it should be roughly 2 gallons of def for every 100 gallons of diesel fuel used. Also little or none is used till engine gets up to temp so it should follow that the short trippers/light loads are going to use less.
Awesome, Thank you. Great Video. My ONLY worriy is how much to put in when. Seems a little confusing, or I can just carry a gallon and put it in when it says it low,...or 4 gallons,,,maybe 3......
should last about 5000 miles, and if it says low, just fill it up. should be about 1 gal left at 800 miles.. so a 5 gal jug should fill it at the 800 mile warning..
