*Test Drive Results*

Just got home from test driving an XL 2005 F250 4WD 6.0L Stroke Turbo. She's got 233k of fleet/highway experience and drives beautifully, except for what sounds like an engine knock in the low RPMs. I will definitely get a mechanic to check it out before I buy, but I want to know how much more life I can hope for out of this truck.

Not sure about how long the 6.0 will last, But I would make sure the head gaskets were done with head studs. I know that is a big/expensive job to do. (my neighbor just went through it)
As for the knocking, I drove an 05 6.0 Xl dually last week with 89k and it had a knock at idle when cold too.?

Why head studs? It doesn't seem much like it would matter. Did you get the knock where you step on the brakes at a slow speed and it shakes the whole car? Maybe that's normal of these engines... Which is a bit frightening.

6.0's are bad for blowing the headgaskets. ARB Headstuds will fix the issue. This is a known weakness with this motor.

With that kind of miles if it has not been studed then I would anticipated that you will be doing a head stud job within 6 months.

I'd do an OA on this motor. Turn around is only a few days for the results.

Scott is correct. Head studs are the fix for the heads. From what I have read, International designed the 6.0 with less head bolts than the 7.3.
Studs correct the problem, but its not something you want to do in your garage. The motor has to come out.
I dont recall if it knocked when I hit the brakes, I just remember it when the engine was cold.
It was owned by a woman who babys it around her horse farm. I drove it hard to clean the turbo vanes. It ran so much better when she got it back.

Thinking out loud here. If you have never owned a diesel or worked with them then a high mileage one is not the place to start.

I think if you are interested in them then go with something that is still under warranty.

Give yourself a chance to get up to speed on oil burners before you really have to do any repairs your self.

I'm far from a 6.oh expert but I thought studs were only necessary on a tuned engine. Will the factory studs stretch eventually regardless of tuning?

It just recently happened on BP's 6.0. Not sure of his miles, but under 100K.

From what I have learned, the turbo has variable vanes that if not driven hard gum up with carbon, and stop moving, causing an overboost which blow the head gaskets.
I know not many people are a fan of this guy, but his video describes it better than I can.
